First Impressions
The Storm Zero Parallax, released in September 2022 as an international (Overseas) release, brings the technically fascinating Parallax series back with an interesting new configuration. Visually, the ball comes in a striking mix of White, Black and Ruby that is easy to read on the lane. Inside works the unique asymmetric Aeroflo core, which stands out for one particular trait: at 2.52 RG (in 15 lbs) it sits unusually high for an asymmetric, which favors natural length. At the same time, the 0.054 differential and the 0.019 intermediate differential provide massive flare potential and torque. This core is paired with the NRG Hybrid Reactive coverstock. Unlike the original Parallax, which was polished, the Zero Parallax comes with a 3000-grit Abralon finish. This dull surface tames the high-RG core and makes the ball build traction noticeably earlier than its predecessors without getting bogged down in the oil.
Comparison
In a direct comparison with the original Storm Parallax (TractionX7 Hybrid, polished), the Zero Parallax reads the lane considerably earlier and rounder. Where the original tended to skid over the oil and then react angularly, the Zero offers a much more stable midlane read thanks to the 3000 finish. Compared with the Storm Parallax Effect (pearl, polished), the difference is even clearer: the Effect is a skid-flip monster for later in the block, while the Zero Parallax is a controlled benchmark ball for the start. Against a heavy-oil ball like the Storm Proton PhysiX, the Zero Parallax lacks some of the raw digging power in really deep oil, but in exchange it saves more energy for the backend and can be used more versatilely on different patterns. Its reaction is reminiscent of a slightly longer, modernized version of the Storm Physix (original), but the Aeroflo core gives it an airier motion through the heads.
On the Lanes
The Storm Zero Parallax is made for medium to heavier oil patterns. It fills exactly the gap between the extremely aggressive "snow tires" (like the Gem or Proton PhysiX) and the shiny balls for the later block. The high RG value of the core lets it get through the heads effortlessly, while the rough NRG hybrid cover makes sure it doesn't slide at the breakpoint. That makes it an ideal ball for controlling the pocket and reading the pattern without having to fear overreaction. It is especially effective if you like the security of an asymmetric core but often have trouble with those balls "burning up" too early. Here the Zero Parallax offers exactly the right balance of length and a stable roll phase in the backend to keep carry high even as conditions change.
