To understand bowling ball cores, you should be familiar with three crucial values.

RG (Radius of Gyration) – The running length

What does RG mean?

The RG value indicates how long a ball rolls before it starts to hook. Technically, it's a measure of how the mass is distributed within the ball and how that distribution affects rotational resistance.

Typical value ranges:

  • Low: 2.46 – 2.51
  • Medium: 2.52 – 2.56
  • High: 2.57 – 2.80

How does RG affect ball behavior?

  • Low RG value: The ball starts spinning and hooking earlier.
  • High RG value: The ball travels straighter for longer and reacts later.

Rule of thumb:

The higher the RG value, the longer the ball travels before it reacts.

Differential (Diff) – The hook potential

What does differential mean?

The differential value describes the difference between the maximum and minimum RG value of a core. It determines the hook potential of the ball – that is, how much it can veer off course perpendicular to its direction of travel.

Typical value ranges:

  • Low: < 0.025
  • Medium: 0.026 – 0.046
  • High: 0.047 – 0.060

How does the differential affect the ball's behavior?

  • Low differential: Weaker hook, more controlled ride
  • High differential: Stronger hook, can cross more edges (boards)

Rule of thumb:

The higher the differential value, the more hook potential the ball has.

Intermediate Differential (IDiff) – Fine-tuning

What does Intermediate Differential mean?

This value exists only for asymmetric cores and describes a third, middle RG value. It allows for even more precise control over the ball's trajectory, especially in the middle of the lane.

The three main types of bowling ball cores
