First Impressions
The 900Global Zen/U shows up in a plain but authoritative "Jet Black" that immediately signals its purpose as a control-oriented tool on the lane. The very first time you pick the ball up, the matte surface stands out, finished at the factory with 1000-grit Abralon, which promises extremely early traction. Technically, the Zen/U breaks with the tradition of the previous Zen series by modifying the proven Meditate core. In its place comes the "Meditate LD" (Low Density) core. The lower density raises the RG to 2.56 (at 15 lbs) and lowers the differential to 0.027. This adjustment is meant to keep the ball from burning up too early while still retaining the typically large "footprint" of the Meditate core. Wrapped around this core is the S35 Urethane+ Solid coverstock. This is not traditional old-school urethane, but a modern evolution designed to close the gap between classic urethane and reactive balls. Even before the first shot, the ball suggests that it could generate hook earlier while retaining more energy through the pins than pure urethane.
Comparison
Compared directly to the market leaders in the urethane segment, the Zen/U shows a distinct character. Where a ball like Storm's Pitch Black often reads very early and shows an extremely smooth, almost lazy backend motion, the Urethane+ blend should give the Zen/U a truer, more directional phase through the heads before it makes a more definite move in the transition. It should behave a bit rounder and more controlled than Hammer's Purple Hammer, not quite matching the Purple Hammer's aggressive backend motion, but with more carry potential than the Pitch Black. Against Roto Grip's UC3, which is also considered a hybrid solution, the Zen/U feels even closer to a "true" urethane reaction, since it responds less sensitively to dry boards on the backend. You could say the Zen/U picks up where the Pitch Black runs out of room: when the Pitch Black no longer hits the pocket with enough force or fails to generate enough angle, the Zen/U should deliver exactly that bit of extra hook and hitting power without sacrificing the control you expect from this category of ball.
On the Lanes
The ideal application for the 900Global Zen/U is primarily on shorter oil patterns or on lanes with an extremely "wet/dry" characteristic. If you have a high rev rate and often struggle with over-reacting reactive balls on fresh house patterns, this ball could be a secret weapon for opening up the pocket in a controlled way. It should let you stay farther right (for right-handers) and use the friction directly, without having to worry about unpredictable over-reaction. Even as the lane moves into transition and the oil starts to carry down, the Zen/U should stay playable longer than classic urethane, since the core and the modern cover have more flare potential and therefore bring fresh material to the lane surface. It is less suited to very long oil or playing deep through the oil, since it lacks the necessary aggressiveness in the backend for that. In summary, the Zen/U is primarily a problem solver for control on difficult, erratic or short patterns where reactive balls would be too unpredictable.
