First Impressions
The Dyno-Thane XTC presents itself visually in an attractive two-tone combination of deep red and black that provides excellent visual feedback about the roll phase on the lane. The technical basis of this model is a proven symmetrical core with an RG of 2.520 and a moderate differential of 0.045. These dynamic core numbers are specifically laid out to build clean length in the forward motion and a highly controlled flare potential. The core is wrapped in the reactive Soaker XTC Solid coverstock. Out of the box, this reactive cover comes with a coarse 1000-grit finish, which gives the ball a very tacky, dull texture. This specific material composition is primarily designed to cut effortlessly through even large amounts of oil in the heads and build the needed traction early. Overall, the design aims at a very even, early forward roll. The ball should navigate reliably and safely through the important midlane section without reacting to unexpected friction points with uncontrollable jumps. The construction places its absolute focus on stability and a continuous, predictable motion toward the pocket in order to give the bowler maximum control.
Comparison
In a detailed comparison, the Dyno-Thane XTC positions itself as a highly reliable ball for medium to oily conditions, distinguished by its smooth reaction. Set against a classic benchmark solid like the Storm Phaze II, the XTC shows a marginally longer skid phase in the front part of the lane before it releases its stored energy. While the Storm Phaze II makes a very pronounced, dynamic change of direction once it leaves the oiled area, the Soaker XTC cover of the Dyno-Thane model produces a considerably more arcing, flatter and more continuous shape. Comparing the ball motion to a modern asymmetrical heavy-oil ball like the Brunswick Defender, the XTC with its moderate differential breaks noticeably more quietly. In overall dynamics that makes it much more controllable and far less prone to overreacting on heavily dried-up boards. In direct contrast to highly polished pearl models, this ball deliberately sacrifices some length through its coarse texture in favor of maximum control on the lane. It gives up entirely on the sharp change of direction in the backend that is often sought from pure pearl balls, and instead offers unshakable line integrity in the oil.
On the Lanes
On the lanes, the Dyno-Thane XTC proves to be a highly specialized tool for medium to heavily oiled lane conditions as well as for freshly laid oil patterns. If you naturally generate significantly higher ball speed, or if you are a bowler with a rather low rev rate desperately looking for dependable hook on demanding patterns, you'll find a reliable option in this model. The out-of-the-box coarse surface ensures that the ball never slides through ineffectively even in very heavy oil in the heads, but picks up its forward roll early and securely. Especially in situations with heavy carrydown, where the oil is pushed further down the lane over the course of play, the solid cover plows unimpressed through the layer and holds the chosen line extremely stable. However, as soon as the lane moves noticeably into transition over the course of a tournament or an intense league game and the front part of the lane dries up, this model loses noticeable effectiveness. The very early friction then inevitably causes the ball to use up its rotational energy far too early on the lane. In the end that shows up as a very flat, powerless entry angle into the pins and massively reduced carry, since the necessary punch at the pin deck is simply missing. In those moments an immediate switch to weaker or polished balls is mandatory, because on dried-up lanes the XTC burns up its power much too early and can no longer deliver the angle needed for optimal results.
