First Impressions
The Radical Xeno Pearl was released in January 2017 as the dynamic complement to the original Xeno Solid. Color-wise, this ball comes in an elegant combination of Blue, Silver and White Pearl that is shown off particularly well by the glossy surface finish. Technically, the ball is built around the asymmetric Xeno Core, which uses a specific geometry to optimize the mass distribution inside the ball. In the 15-pound version, this core carries an RG of 2.508, a differential of 0.048 and an intermediate differential of 0.016. These numbers signal high potential for a strong change of direction at the breakpoint. One special feature of this model is the use of carbon fibers in the coverstock blend, which should increase the durability of the material and improve energy transfer to the pins. The Xeno Pearl cover is sanded at the factory with a 500 Siaair Micro Pad and then polished with Royal Compound, resulting in an extremely smooth surface designed to minimize friction in the heads and store energy for the back part of the lane.
Comparison Within the 2017 Radical lineup, the Xeno Pearl serves as the longer and more angular counterpart to the Radical Xeno Solid. While the solid version builds traction early in the midlane thanks to its matte surface and shows a controlled arcing motion, the Xeno Pearl is tuned to clear the oil as far down the lane as possible and only react explosively once it contacts drier boards. Compared to the Radical Cash, which was designed as a massive powerhouse for the heaviest oil, the Xeno Pearl offers considerably less overall hook but delivers a much steeper entry angle into the pocket. An interesting comparison is the Storm Code Black, which is also a strong asymmetric pearl option. Because of its specific core geometry, the Xeno Pearl shows a somewhat more stable continuation through the pins, while the Code Black is often known for its extremely sharp reaction at the breakpoint. Against symmetric pearl balls such as the Storm IQ Tour Pearl (Emerald), the asymmetric core of the Xeno Pearl provides a noticeably more aggressive lane-read characteristic and demands a more precise adjustment to the transition, since the asymmetric dynamics kick in faster and harder when the ball finds friction.
On the Lanes The Radical Xeno Pearl finds its ideal application on medium oil conditions as well as on typical house shots once the first transition becomes noticeable. Thanks to the polished pearl surface, the ball should get through the heads effortlessly, even when the heads are already slightly burned up or the oil in the middle of the lane has been carried away by heavy play. Its performance characteristics especially benefit bowlers with high ball speed, or a moderate rev rate, who are looking for help steering the ball efficiently into the pocket at the end of the lane. The Xeno Pearl lets you move your line inside and send the ball out over the drier outside boards, and thanks to the carbon fibers in the cover it should retain excellent carry. In situations where matte balls lose too much energy in the middle of the lane and therefore hit the pins flat, the Xeno Pearl provides the backend aggressiveness needed to take out the corner pins reliably. Should the reaction at the breakpoint be too violent on extremely dry lanes, a light surface adjustment with a fine Abralon pad (4000, for example) can help make the hook a bit smoother and more controllable. All in all, the ball proves to be a versatile tool for tournament bowlers who need a dependable option for the transition from fresh oil to a broken-down pattern without giving up the power of an asymmetric core.
