First Impressions
The Roto Grip Wild Streak comes in an eye-catching Purple/Grey/Black color combination and introduces both a new core and a new coverstock design to the HP3 line. At its heart sits the new Mutated Rotary Core, a symmetric design that offers a unique combination with a 2.60 RG and a 0.048 differential. These specs are noteworthy, since a ball with this much cover strength rarely pairs such a high RG with such a low differential. The SureTrax-S19 Solid Reactive coverstock is an entirely new formulation for Roto Grip and should provide more traction than eTrax while being less aggressive than MicroTrax. A 3000-grit pad surface finish completes the technical data.
Comparison
Compared to the Roto Grip Idol balls, the Wild Streak is clearly less aggressive — while the Idol series works excellently on heavy oil and sport patterns, it can be too much ball for typical house shots. The Wild Streak positions itself perfectly between the entry-level Hustle series and the high-performance Idol line. The motion characteristics differ as well — where Idol balls tend toward a more angular backend, the Wild Streak offers a smoother, arcing reaction. Compared to the Roto Grip MVP, it shows similar motion patterns, but with a slightly earlier hook and a stronger finish downlane. Against the Storm Allroad, the Wild Streak is less versatile in terms of lane play options, but more variable when it comes to release manipulation — the Allroad offers more forgiveness and a more defined motion thanks to its stronger cover.
On the Lanes
The Wild Streak shows its strengths on medium to medium-heavy oil conditions and offers a different reaction than what you're used to from the HP3 line. The high-RG core stores energy until deep down the lane and creates a later backend shape. It is particularly interesting if you want to play straighter with a stronger ball, or if you have trouble getting stronger balls to get down the lane — it could be perfect for older bowlers who have lost ball speed but don't want to move inside. On sport patterns it often performs better than on house shots, since its particular release sensitivity is less of a problem there. Unusual for a strong solid, it often doesn't show its best performance until after some transition, as it can stay too far back on fresh oil. It favors strokers and tweeners more than pure power players, since its smooth motion complements a controlled, consistent release.
