First Impressions
The 900Global Volatility shows up in a dark combination of black and purple, which already hints at its aggressive nature. Technically, this ball marked a milestone for the manufacturer in January 2020, since it was the first to use the S86R Hybrid coverstock, which was considered the strongest cover in the lineup at the time. Out of the box, the ball comes with a 2000 grit Abralon finish, which gives it a very rough feel and early traction. Inside, the Volatility Asymmetric core works with a low 2.49 RG and a 0.050 differential. Interesting is the deliberately moderate intermediate differential of 0.014. This combination should keep the core from locking up immediately despite its asymmetry, storing energy a bit longer instead. The ball motion can be described as extremely grabby through the midlane, while the ball still maintains a continuous move in the backend.
Comparison
Compared directly to the 900Global Flux, the Volatility is clearly more aggressive. Where the Flux offers a rounder motion, the Volatility generates more overall hook through the S86R Hybrid cover and reacts more quickly to friction. Looking at products from other manufacturers, the ball sits in a similar category as the Roto Grip UFO. The hybrid blend does make the Volatility seem a bit more versatile than pure solids, which often burn up earlier. Against a benchmark ball like the Storm Phaze II, the Volatility needs considerably more oil on the lane. It reads the boards earlier and provides more security on fresh, oily patterns, where the Phaze II might slide too far.
On the Lanes
The 900Global Volatility is designed primarily for high oil volumes and fresh sport patterns. If you throw the ball fast, you'll love the traction, since the ball reliably slows down and starts its hook even at higher speeds. For rev-dominant players it could be too strong on a normal house shot and lose energy too early, which can hurt carry in the pocket. Its strength lies in getting through the heads and working hard in the midlane without becoming uncontrollable. Once the transition sets in and the heads dry up, though, it's time to switch to weaker material, because the Volatility then tends to roll out too early.
