The Brunswick Viz-a-Ball Spider immediately stands out thanks to its unusual and eye-catching 360-degree graphic design, which shows a highly detailed spider motif and sets it visually apart from classic, single-color bowling balls. Because of prints like these, these balls are also often very popular with collectors. Technically, this is a pure polyester ball designed primarily for absolute straightness and maximum predictability. Inside works a traditional, very simple three-piece pancake or bullet core construction, which in combination with the extremely hard plastic shell produces very low performance numbers. The RG sits at roughly 2.715, paired with an extremely low differential of just 0.019. The cover is a classic polyester coverstock finished at the factory with a high-gloss polish. This mirror-smooth condition should let the ball glide nearly friction-free through the heads and the middle boards without building up any noteworthy kinetic energy for a side-to-side move. The entire technical setup was deliberately laid out by the developers to reduce hook potential to an absolute minimum and instead create maximum length down the lane. As a result, the ball reacts extremely neutrally to any kind of oil pattern and offers a ball motion that is determined almost exclusively by the bowler's ball speed and angle.

On the Lanes In practice, the Brunswick Viz-a-Ball Spider fills a very specific and essential role in any ambitious bowler's arsenal: it serves as the classic and absolutely dependable spare ball. Since by design it develops virtually no hook, it works excellently for safely clearing single pins left standing at the edge of the pin deck, especially the notorious 10 pin for right-handers or the 7 pin for lefties. You can throw the ball on a fast, straight line diagonally across the boards without worrying that the oil pattern or completely dry spots will negatively affect the path. Even when transition sets in massively over the course of a long tournament and the lanes become extremely unpredictable as the oil breaks down, this model offers a consistent option for precise spare shots. For the very first ball, aimed at a strike, it is hardly suitable under normal conditions, since it lacks the necessary dynamics in the core to drive into the pocket at an optimal angle. Too shallow an entry angle with pure plastic balls generally leads to very weak carry and a lot of unluckily standing pins. Only for absolute beginners who are still learning the game, or on extremely dry and heavily played patterns, can this hard cover be used as a primary strike ball. Pros and advanced league bowlers, however, value it as a pure precision tool that runs uncompromisingly and accurately straight.
