First Impressions
The Brunswick Vintage Inferno was released in August 2017 and is a technically modernized homage to one of the most famous balls in Brunswick history. Visually, it picks up the iconic Smoke, Fire and Flame design that already distinguished the 2003 original. Inside works the symmetrical Inferno Low RG Core, which at 15 pounds delivers a very low RG value of 2.479 and a high differential of 0.050. This combination of low RG and high differential is designed to get the ball revving quickly while generating strong flare potential at the same time. The coverstock is Activator 2.0 Pearl Reactive, a chemical evolution of the original shell adapted to modern oil volumes. The surface is treated at the factory with a 500 Siaair Micro Pad and then brought to a high gloss with Crown Factory Compound and Polish to ensure clean passage through the heads.
Comparison In comparison, the Brunswick Vintage Inferno shows clear differences from other balls in the lineup. Compared directly to the Brunswick Magnitude 035, which was released at the same time, the Inferno is considerably more dynamic in the backend. While the Magnitude 035 stands for control and a smooth motion with its low differential, the Vintage Inferno delivers a classic skid-snap reaction with a sharp change of direction. Compared to the Storm Hy-Road Pearl, a direct competitor among symmetrical pearl balls, the Vintage Inferno tends to enter the roll phase earlier thanks to its noticeably lower RG (2.479 versus 2.57), which gives it a bit more stability in the midlane without sacrificing aggressiveness at the breakpoint. Against an asymmetrical pearl ball like the Hammer Black Widow Gold, the Vintage Inferno responds a little more smoothly and less abruptly at the point of friction, but still offers enough hook to play wide angles.
On the Lanes The ideal application for the Brunswick Vintage Inferno is medium oil conditions, particularly when the lane goes through transition over the course of a block. When balls with a rough surface (solid) start to hook too early or lose energy, the Vintage Inferno is the right ball to switch to. Thanks to the polished surface, it glides effortlessly through the already played-in heads and stores its energy for the last third of the lane. Due to the low RG value, the ball still takes on rotation readily, which makes it usable for a broad range of player types. If you have a lower rev rate, you'll benefit from the core's help getting the ball started, while if you have high rotation, you have the option of opening up the lane and playing across a lot of boards. It generates a steep entry angle into the pocket, which improves carry as long as there are enough dry boards in the backend for the ball to work against.
