First Impressions
The Ebonite Verdict was introduced in August 2017 as the new flagship of the high-performance line. Visually, the ball stands out with its color combination of dark blue, blue and green. The technical heart of the ball is the asymmetric Justice Core, designed as a further development of the Warrior core series. With a 2.48 RG and a high 0.055 differential at 15 pounds, this core offers massive flare potential. The asymmetric design is rounded out by an intermediate differential of 0.018. Wrapped around the core is the GSV-1 Solid Reactive coverstock, a completely new material blend at the time that, according to the manufacturer, ushers in a new generation of the proven GB series. The surface comes out of the box with a dull 500/2000 Abralon finish, which even visually suggests a very early bite into the oil.
Comparison In comparison, the Ebonite Verdict shows itself to be one of the strongest balls of its era. Directly compared to the Ebonite Warrior Supreme, the Verdict offers noticeably more angularity at the breakpoint, while the Warrior Supreme stands out more for its continuous but rounder motion. Compared to the Storm Phaze II, considered a benchmark ball for controlled reactions, the Ebonite Verdict revs up considerably earlier in the midlane and requires substantially more oil volume in order not to lose energy prematurely. Against the Ebonite Maverick, the Justice Core in the Verdict provides better continuation through the pins, since it should store energy better despite the high friction in the middle part of the lane. Where other solid balls often hit flat under high friction, the Verdict should maintain a more aggressive backend reaction.
On the Lanes The ideal application for the Ebonite Verdict is on heavy to very heavy oil patterns. Through the combination of the GSV-1 cover and the Justice Core, the ball should be able to generate traction even through thick films of oil. If you throw the ball fast, it gives you the security that the ball reads in time and doesn't run past the breakpoint. If you have a high rev rate, on the other hand, you'll need to react quickly to the transition and move your boards inside, since the dull cover can burn up the heads in a hurry. On a typical house shot, the surface can be adjusted to 4000 Abralon or polished if needed to get more length. In its stock configuration, however, it is a tool for maximum hook and control into the pocket when the lane conditions demand a lot of resistance.
