First Impressions
The Motiv Venom Recoil, released in March 2019, marks a significant technological milestone in the history of the popular Venom series. Visually, the ball immediately stands out with its bright two-tone orange, finished with a dull 4000-grit LSS (Laser Scan Sanded) surface. The real revolution, however, is hidden inside: for the first time in the Venom line, an asymmetric core is used, the Gear APG (Asymmetric Performance Gain). This core was developed specifically to compensate for the loss of balance holes (following USBC rule changes) and to give the driller more options. With a 2.47 RG and a 0.036 differential (at 15 lbs), it stays true to the typical numbers of the series, but adds an intermediate differential of 0.013. This innovative core is wrapped in the Coercion MFS (Medium Friction Solid) Reactive coverstock. The combination promises a ball that retains the proven controllability of the Venom line, but produces a more defined reaction through the midlane and a somewhat earlier rotation thanks to the asymmetry.
Comparison
Compared directly to the legendary Motiv Venom Shock (symmetric), the Recoil shows a noticeably different dynamic. While the Venom Shock is known for its extremely smooth, almost seamless arc, the Venom Recoil offers a slightly earlier read in the midlane and a more defined change of direction thanks to its asymmetric Gear APG core, without ever coming across as jerky. It digs into the oil a bit earlier than the Shock. Compared to a stronger asymmetric ball like the Motiv Jackal Ghost, the Recoil is considerably tamer and cleaner through the heads; it is essentially the little brother that uses similar physical principles but is designed for less oil volume. Against a Storm IQ Tour (solid, symmetric), the Recoil generates slightly more torque at the breakpoint due to its mild asymmetry (intermediate diff 0.013) and stands up faster, while the IQ Tour often stays in the skid phase longer and moves more gently toward the pocket.
On the Lanes
The Motiv Venom Recoil is ideally positioned on light to medium oil patterns, where it works as a more aggressive benchmark solution. It is the perfect choice when symmetric balls (such as the Venom Shock) start to "swim" on the lane or can no longer cleanly generate entry angle, but the big heavy-oil balls would burn up far too early. Thanks to the 4000-grit surface and the Coercion MFS cover, it provides enough traction not to slide over the oil, yet stays smooth enough to save energy for the pins. Its asymmetry helps move the ball reliably into its turn at the end of the pattern, even if you have to play the ball a bit further outside. It is especially valuable on house shots with a clear wet/dry definition, since it holds the edge well without jumping unpredictably.
