The Dyno-Thane Vendetta Purple Pearl adds a visually striking pearl option in a bold violet to the well-known Vendetta series. The design is kept classic and should present a clearly visible axis of rotation on the lane. Inside this model works the proven symmetrical two-piece core that has already been used successfully in other balls of this established line. With a very low 2.460 RG and a moderate 0.042 differential, the mass center of the core system sits extremely close to the center, which from a technical standpoint favors a very early roll phase. The coverstock is a reactive pearl blend that comes with a strong polished finish out of the box. This particular combination of a core that actually wants to roll early and a very smooth pearl surface should let the ball glide through the heads with extreme ease and show a reaction only very late down the lane. Instead of burning up energy early on the oil pattern, the pearl material stores that power efficiently in order to unleash a dynamic, sharp move in the backend. The technical setup positions the Dyno-Thane Vendetta Purple Pearl as a classic specialist for medium to lightly oily lane conditions, where getting through the front third of the lane absolutely cleanly is essential.
Comparison
Looking at the ball motion of the Dyno-Thane Vendetta Purple Pearl in detail, a direct comparison with its dull series companion, the Dyno-Thane Vendetta Black Solid Reactive, suggests itself first. While the black solid version reads very early thanks to its heavily roughed-up surface and produces a rather arcing, steady overall reaction, the Vendetta Purple Pearl generates noticeably more length down the lane thanks to its polished finish. On the pearl version, the transition from skid into hook happens considerably more abruptly and more angularly. Taking a modern reference for polished covers such as the Storm Hy-Road Pearl, clear parallels show up in the intended length development. Both balls use a low-friction pearl surface to avoid an early reaction in the front part of the lane. That said, because of its significantly lower RG, the core of the Dyno-Thane Vendetta Purple Pearl theoretically starts wanting to rotate somewhat earlier than the core of the Storm Hy-Road Pearl. Compared directly with strong dull balls like the Storm Phaze II, which were developed for a massive hook in deep oil and an extremely smooth roll phase, the Vendetta Purple Pearl is predictably outmatched on wet conditions in the front part of the lane, since the material cannot build up the necessary traction there in time.
On the Lanes
In practice, the Dyno-Thane Vendetta Purple Pearl is designed primarily for medium lane conditions as well as for the later stages of a tournament. It plays to its strengths especially once the heads are already well broken down and the front part of the lane gradually takes on drier characteristics. If you are forced to move your starting position further inside over the course of a set in order to cross more boards with the ball, the polished cover should provide enough length without the ball burning up too early or losing significant power. Once the ball finds sufficient friction in the dry backend, the energy stored for so long should be released in a very sharp and powerful hook toward the pin deck. That makes this model particularly attractive if you prefer a clear, angular backend reaction to maximize the entry angle into the pocket and thereby lastingly optimize carry. If you throw the ball at rather low speed, the smooth polished factory finish can be a big help in keeping the ball on the lane long enough without much effort. On extremely fresh, heavy oil, however, the pearl material reaches its physical limits very quickly, since in such scenarios the ball can often start sliding and miss the breakpoint. Should the reaction turn out too jumpy on certain patterns, a light mechanical adjustment of the surface with a fine sanding pad can help smooth the overall reaction slightly. For typical league play on standard house shots, though, this ball is an excellent tool for maintaining a dynamic ball motion.
