First Impressions
The Dyno-Thane Vendetta 357, often also listed as the Vendetta 357 Magnum, is a bowling ball that catches the eye with its classic Blue and Copper color scheme. Inside works a symmetrical, two-piece core with a very low RG of 2.460 and a moderate differential of 0.042. The coverstock is the so-called Tru-Grip Reactive Pearl, a modified pearl version of the manufacturer's shell technology of that era. Out of the box, the surface comes with a polished finish. This specific combination of a core that starts rotating very early thanks to the low RG and an extremely free-sliding, polished pearl cover should make the ball glide especially cleanly through the heads and save its energy for a very pronounced, aggressive move on the backend. The technical setup positions the Dyno-Thane Vendetta 357 as a performance ball for medium lane conditions, where effortless passage through the front third of the lane and a sharp change of direction at the end of the oil pattern are required.
Comparison Comparing within the same model line, the Dyno-Thane Vendetta 357 behaves noticeably differently than its direct relative, the Dyno-Thane Vendetta 44 Magnum. While the 44 Magnum reads the lane considerably earlier due to its different setup and offers a rather steady overall reaction, the Dyno-Thane Vendetta 357 generates far more length in the heads. The transition from skid into hook is much more angular and direct on the Vendetta 357. Comparing the ball motion with a well-known benchmark for pearl balls such as the Storm Hy-Road Pearl, clear parallels in intent become apparent. Both balls use a polished pearl cover to avoid early friction in the front part of the lane. However, the core of the Dyno-Thane Vendetta 357 theoretically begins its rotation earlier than the core of the Storm Hy-Road Pearl because of its significantly lower RG. That means that despite the smooth pearl cover, the Vendetta 357 has a very strong tendency to stand up into a roll phase as soon as it finds even minimal friction. Compared with aggressive solid balls like the Storm Phaze II, which are designed for massive hook in heavy oil, the Dyno-Thane Vendetta 357 logically remains inferior at high volume in the front part of the lane, since the pearl material cannot build the necessary traction there in time.
On the Lanes In practice, the Dyno-Thane Vendetta 357 is primarily designed for medium lane conditions. It plays to its strengths especially when the heads are already broken down and the front part of the lane is gradually drying up. If you have to move further inside over the course of a series in order to cross more boards, the polished pearl cover should provide enough length without the ball burning up too early or losing energy. Once the ball reaches the dry backend, the stored energy should be released in a very sharp and powerful hook toward the pin deck. That makes this model particularly attractive if you prefer a clear, angular backend reaction to maximize the entry angle into the pocket and thus optimize carry. If you throw the ball at rather low speed, the factory polished finish can be a big help in keeping the ball on the lane long enough. On heavy oil or on very fresh, extremely long patterns, however, the pearl material quickly reaches its limits, because in such scenarios the ball can start sliding and miss the breakpoint. In those cases, a mechanical change to the surface is needed to stabilize the reaction. For league play on typical house shots, especially in the later games, this ball is nevertheless an excellent tool for maintaining a dynamic motion when the lanes take on drier characteristics.
