First Impressions
The Storm Ultra Bite is a high-performance bowling ball that was released in January 2022 as a special overseas model. Visually, the ball comes in a striking green and yellow color combination. At the center of this model sits the proven asymmetric G2 core, known for its quick-revving action. At a ball weight of 15 pounds, the core carries a very low radius of gyration of 2.47 and a high differential of 0.058, supplemented by a mass bias differential of 0.028. The asymmetric design of the G2 core has been established for many years and forms the foundation for predictable yet dynamic ball motion. This core is wrapped in the NRG-3 Hybrid Reactive coverstock. This cover comes out of the box with a 1500 grit polished finish. This specific combination of a highly aggressive asymmetric core and a polished hybrid surface should let the ball glide cleanly through the heads while still storing enough energy for a powerful backend reaction. The technical specifications point to immense hook potential, developed specifically for more demanding oil patterns and larger oil volumes.
Comparison
In comparison, the Storm Ultra Bite clearly shows its asymmetric and aggressive character. Directly against the Storm Phaze II, which uses a symmetric core in combination with a solid cover, the Ultra Bite offers noticeably more length in the front part of the lane and a considerably sharper change of direction at the breakpoint. Contrasted with a pure pearl ball like the Storm Absolute, it stands out that the Ultra Bite's NRG-3 hybrid cover builds somewhat earlier and more consistent traction in the midlane. Another interesting comparison ball is the Hammer Black Widow 3.0. While the Hammer ball is equipped with a strongly absorbing solid coverstock and reads the oil extremely early, the polished surface of the Storm Ultra Bite should make it react a bit later, but retain more energy for its entry into the pocket. Compared to the Roto Grip Gem, which is likewise considered a heavyweight for heavy oil, the Ultra Bite behaves a bit more forgiving in the heads, since the Gem with its dull solid shell works significantly more aggressively in the front third of the lane. Against classic symmetric benchmark balls such as the Motiv Venom Shock, the Ultra Bite creates a significantly stronger overall motion across the boards and considerably higher flare potential, which makes it a more specialized choice for heavy conditions.
On the Lanes
The ideal application for the Storm Ultra Bite is on lane conditions with medium to heavy oil volume. Due to the very low RG value and the strongly pronounced differential, this ball should be especially beneficial for player types who need technological help getting the ball into a roll early. If you have a lower to medium rev rate, the interplay of the strong G2 core and the hybrid coverstock provides the stability needed to reliably carry the ball into the pocket and maximize carry. Beyond that, the ball should be excellently suited for playing deeper lines, when you are forced to send the ball further outside across the boards and have to trust that it comes back strongly enough. On heavily dried-up lanes, or in situations where friction takes over, the ball's aggressive construction could cause it to burn up energy too early and hit flat into the pins. In such cases, a ball change to weaker material is advisable. During the transition, when the oil is carried away or pushed around through play, the hybrid cover should bridge the gap between solid and pearl reactions by offering a balanced mix of length and control. In addition, the polished surface can be adjusted with a light sanding if needed, in order to increase traction and let the hook start even earlier on the lane.
