First Impressions
Released in February 2024, the Brunswick Ultimate Defender presents itself as a technological evolution within the popular Defender series, aiming to combine traction with an improved backend reaction. Visually, the ball stands out thanks to its matte surface treatment, which comes out of the box with a 500/2000 Siaair Micro Pad finish. That rough texture signals even before the first shot that this bowling ball was designed to read the lane early. At the heart of the ball works the proven Portal X core, an asymmetric design known for its strong torque characteristics. At 15 pounds, the core carries a low RG of 2.473 and a high differential of 0.054, complemented by a strong intermediate differential of 0.015. Those numbers speak clearly: the ball is physically built to get into rotation quickly and to develop massive flare potential on the lane. The decisive feature of the Ultimate Defender, however, is the pairing of this core with the HK22 - A.C.T. 3.0 hybrid coverstock. Brunswick once again relies on the HyperKinetic22 base technology, which stands for purer color reproduction and, more importantly, for a more dynamic response to friction. By using A.C.T. 3.0 (Active Coverstock Technology) in a hybrid version, the manufacturer is trying to close the gap between a traditional solid cover, which often rolls very early, and a pearl cover, which generates length. Despite the "hybrid" designation, the dull surface finish means the ball behaves more like a strong solid, though the HK22 additive should make it lose less energy in the back part of the lane than classic matte balls.
Comparison
Placing the Brunswick Ultimate Defender within the current market, it sits in the "high performance" segment for oily conditions. Compared directly to Brunswick's original Defender Solid, the Ultimate Defender is presumably a bit more responsive at the end of the pattern thanks to the HK22 base, without sacrificing the necessary traction in oil. While the Defender Hybrid, with its polished surface, was intended for later blocks and more length, the Ultimate Defender works considerably earlier and more aggressively. It therefore serves as a link that combines the traction of the original with the continuation of the HK22 technology. Looking at products from other manufacturers for reference, the Ultimate Defender can technically be placed near the Harsh Reality from 900 Global or the Extreme Envy from Hammer. Both comparison models also target heavy oil patterns. Unlike extremely early-rolling "snowplows" such as the Gem from Roto Grip, which sometimes tend to burn up in the backend, the Ultimate Defender's design goal is to preserve enough energy through the hybrid cover to drive through the pins. It competes directly with balls that are the first choice out of the bag when the lanes are freshly stripped. Another interesting point of comparison would be Brunswick's Mindset, though the Portal X core should give the Ultimate Defender a somewhat rounder, yet still powerful, shape compared to the often very angular motion of other asymmetric balls.
On the Lanes
The ideal scenarios for the Brunswick Ultimate Defender are found primarily on heavy oil conditions or long oil patterns. Because of the 2000 finish and the low-RG core, the ball needs plenty of oil in the heads so it doesn't lose energy too early. If you throw the ball fast and often struggle to get the ball to start up in time on slick lanes, this ball could be an excellent solution. The rough surface helps reach the pocket in a controlled manner by minimizing skid through the oil. When the ball encounters friction, the HK22 technology should ensure that the change of direction is defined rather than sluggish. If you like to play deeper angles and send the ball across a lot of boards, you could benefit from the hybrid blend, since in theory it should keep the ball from entering the pocket too flat, as can happen with pure solids on broken-down lanes. Still, the Ultimate Defender is primarily a ball for the start of a tournament or league session on fresh oil. Once the transition sets in and the heads dry up, the ball will likely be too strong for many player types and burn up too early, which could hurt carry. It is the tool for reading the lane and establishing a line. Technically savvy bowlers can of course adjust the surface; polishing the cover would presumably make the ball more versatile for medium oil conditions, while its core character as an asymmetric heavyweight would remain. In summary, the Ultimate Defender is conceived as a benchmark ball for heavy conditions, meant to combine security in oil with a powerful hook in the backend.
