The Brunswick Twist, introduced in June 2018, presents itself as a modern entry-level option in the reactive bowling ball category. Visually, the series stands out with a wide range of lively color combinations, ranging from plain black/gold/silver to eye-catching neon mixes. The design aims to appeal to a broad audience without looking overdone. Technically, the Twist marks a significant development in the Brunswick lineup. At the heart of the ball (in the 12 through 16 pound weights) works the "Twist Low Diff" core. This is a symmetrical core developed specifically for controlled dynamics. With an RG of 2.591 (at 15 lbs), it belongs among the balls with a very high moment of inertia. This should ensure that the ball stores energy for a long time and skids very easily through the heads. This core is paired with the proven R-16 Pearl Reactive coverstock. This chemical composition is designed to offer a balance between traction and skid. The factory finish underlines this approach: after a 500 Siaair sanding, the ball is treated with Crown Factory Compound and then with Crown Factory Polish. The result is a shiny surface that should create little friction in the front part of the lane in order to guarantee maximum length. The 0.018 differential is deliberately kept low to minimize flare potential and prevent excessive overreaction on dry lanes.
Comparison
To place the Brunswick Twist correctly, a direct comparison with Brunswick's "Rhino" series is necessary. While the Brunswick Rhino is often considered the classic entry-level ball, the Twist slots in just below it in terms of performance. The Rhino features a traditional light bulb core with a higher differential (approx. 0.030), which gives it more hook potential and a more aggressive backend motion in direct comparison. The Twist, on the other hand, is designed to work where even the Rhino might react too strongly. Compared to polyester balls (like the Brunswick T-Zone or the Ebonite Maxim), the Twist represents the logical next step. While polyester balls travel strictly straight and show no notable reaction to friction, the Twist's reactive cover offers the ability to generate a recognizable hook without overwhelming the bowler with an uncontrollable curve. Looking at the wider market, the Twist competes with models like the Storm Tropical Surge or the Roto Grip Hustle (though the Hustle series is often rated somewhat stronger). Against the Storm Tropical Surge, the Twist tends to show a slightly smoother motion at the breakpoint, which makes it one of the most controllable options for extremely dry conditions. It differs clearly from stronger "Burner" balls like the 900 Global Burner Pearl, which despite their low price often use higher-performance cores and therefore show a more angular reaction. The Twist stays true to its character: length and control come before absolute overall motion.
On the Lanes
The ideal scenario for the Brunswick Twist is lanes with low oil volume or conditions where the heads are already well broken down ("fried heads"). Thanks to the high RG and the polished R-16 surface, the ball largely ignores the first several feet of the lane. This is especially valuable when friction shows up very early on the lane and stronger balls tend to lose energy too soon. For beginners buying their first own ball who want to learn how to put rotation on it, the Twist offers a forgiving learning curve. It punishes release mistakes less drastically than high-performance balls. If you unintentionally pull the ball across the boards or don't keep your rotation consistent, the Twist usually still stays near the pocket instead of over-turning into the gutter. It should help you develop a feel for the hook without being overwhelmed by the reaction. For advanced tournament players, the Twist has a place as a specialty ball in the arsenal. When the transition has progressed late in a tournament block and even balls like the Brunswick Rhino or the Hammer Raw pick up too early, the Twist can be an option to stay further right on the boards and avoid having to open up the angle to the pocket too much. It generates enough angle for acceptable carry as long as there are enough dry boards in the backend to start the direction change. On fresh, long or heavy oil, however, the ball will likely slide past the breakpoint, since it lacks the traction to grab in the oil.
