First Impressions
The DV8 Turmoil 2 Solid hits the lane in a striking Black, Royal and Yellow color combination that visually signals its purpose right away: a reliable workhorse. Technically, this ball represented a significant upgrade within the Turmoil series when it arrived in May 2019. Inside works the newly developed Command Symmetric core, which compared to its predecessor shows a slightly higher RG of 2.530 and a differential of 0.043. This adjustment should provide improved energy transfer. The biggest change, however, is in the cover: here DV8 uses the Intense Composite Solid Reactive coverstock. Out of the box, the ball ships with a 500/3000 Siaair finish. This matte preparation gives it a tacky texture designed to read early in the oil and produce a controllable, arcing motion.
Comparison
Compared directly to its sister model, the DV8 Turmoil 2 Pearl, the Solid shows a completely different character. While the Pearl (polished, same core shape) glides cleanly through the heads and reacts angularly at the breakpoint, the Turmoil 2 Solid digs into the lane much earlier and offers a rounder, smoother overall motion. Against the original Turmoil Solid, the "2" version delivers more overall hook and better continuation through the pin deck thanks to the new Intense Composite shell. Compared with a classic benchmark ball like the Storm Phaze II, the Turmoil 2 Solid is often a bit weaker and more controllable, which makes it an excellent alternative when the Phaze II is too strong for the house shot at hand. It behaves similarly to a Brunswick Cutting Edge Solid, but thanks to the newer cover additives it often offers a little more bite in oil.
On the Lanes
The DV8 Turmoil 2 Solid is the prototypical "benchmark ball" for league bowlers. It works excellently as the first ball out of the bag to read the lane conditions on fresh oil. Thanks to the 3000 finish it offers enough traction not to slide on medium to slightly heavier oil volume, but it doesn't burn up as early as pure high-performance monsters. Its strength is predictability: it smooths out overreacting backends ("wet/dry") by distributing energy evenly down the lane. When the lane dries up over the course of the evening and the ball starts hooking too early, switching to the Turmoil 2 Pearl is the logical next step. For extremely heavy oil or very long sport patterns, though, it lacks some of the torque of the big asymmetrics; there it would be more at home on shorter patterns.
