First Impressions
The Brunswick True Motion was released in November 2017 as a modern answer to the growing demand for classic ball motion on difficult lanes. Visually, the plain black ball recalls the era of the early urethane balls, but technically it is built in a far more complex way. Inside works the symmetrical Magnitude 035 Low RG core, known for its smoothness and predictability. In a 15-pound model, this core shows a low RG of 2.521 and a moderate differential of 0.035. The special part is the surface: Brunswick uses the True Urethane coverstock here, finished at the factory with a 500 and 1000 Siaair Micro Pad. This combination of materials should provide the traction and durability of true urethane, but combined with the dynamics of a modern core design.
Comparison Compared directly with the Brunswick Magnitude 035, which uses the same core but has a solid reactive cover, the True Motion shows a clearly earlier and smoother reaction. While the reactive version releases its energy only in the midlane and makes a stronger change of direction, the True Motion starts working already in the heads and shows a very smooth, arcing motion. Compared with the Hammer Purple Hammer Urethane, the True Motion offers a more stable roll phase thanks to its special core and a bit more overall hook in oil. Compared with a Storm Pitch Black, the True Motion is overall stronger through the middle of the lane, which makes it less prone to sliding through the front on longer oil patterns. It therefore positions itself as a more powerful urethane tool that can cover more boards than conventional, purely control-oriented urethane models from other manufacturers.
On the Lanes The Brunswick True Motion is primarily designed for short oil patterns or lanes with an extremely unpredictable backend. It should make sure that you control the front part of the lane and minimize the volatility of the transition. Because of the urethane surface, the ball reacts very directly to friction and avoids the abrupt hook that often leads to uncontrolled results with reactive balls. That makes it an ideal choice if you have a high rev rate, or for situations where precision and repeatability matter more than maximum angle. In practice, the ball allows very controlled play from outside, while the Magnitude core preserves enough energy to ensure stable carry in the pocket. For league bowlers it is also an excellent option on drier lanes when the heads are already well used and conventional balls would react too early and too strongly.
