First Impressions
The Motiv Trident Shield, released in December 2016, is a special edition (often listed as an overseas release) of the popular Trident series. Visually it differs noticeably from the gray original thanks to its Sapphire and Black Pearl coloring, which gives it a certain depth despite the dull finish. Inside works the powerful Turbulent Asymmetric Core, which produces massive flare potential with a low 2.49 RG and a high 0.054 differential (at 15 lbs). The cover is based on Coercion technology (specified as the HVP or HVH variant depending on the region) and comes out of the box with a 3000 grit LSS (Laser Scan Sanded) finish. This combination of rough finish and rev-happy core signals right away that this ball was built for heavier oil conditions and is not intended for dry lanes.
Comparison
Comparing the Trident Shield to the original Motiv Trident, both show very similar characteristics: reading the lane early and a strong, continuous motion. Because of the pearl content in the coverstock, however, the Shield often appears to go a touch longer through the heads before entering the hook, which can make it somewhat more versatile than pure solids on slightly broken-down heads. Against an Ebonite Maverick, which came out in the same period, the Trident Shield often behaves a bit rounder and less abrupt at the breakpoint. Compared with a symmetrical ball like the Motiv Forza GT, the Trident Shield offers considerably more total hook and covers more boards as soon as it finds friction.
On the Lanes
This ball is an excellent choice for heavy oil and fresh sport patterns where control through the midlane is required. Thanks to the 3000 grit pad, the Trident Shield bites through the oil early, prevents skidding past the breakpoint and offers a very predictable reaction. It works outstandingly as the first ball out of the bag to read the lane. If you throw the ball fast, you'll appreciate the traction, since the ball is in no danger of shooting through the pocket (blow-out). Once the lane transitions and the heads dry up, though, you should switch to a polished pearl ball like the Motiv Primal Fear to conserve energy.
