First Impressions
The Radical Tremendous Pearl, released in November 2017, brings the legendary Guru Asymmetric Core back to the lanes, wrapped in a visually striking Blue / Red Pearl design. Technically the ball is based on a low 2.501 RG and a 0.044 differential, complemented by an intermediate differential of 0.018 (at 15 lbs). These asymmetric numbers point to a core that revs up quickly and has high flare potential. The cover is the Ai30 Pearl Reactive coverstock, a further development of the chemistry of the original Tremendous. The factory finish of 500 Siaair with Crown Factory Compound produces a high gloss level that helps the ball get through the heads cleanly without completely sacrificing traction in the midlane.
Comparison
Compared directly to the original Radical Tremendous (solid), the pearl version stays noticeably longer in the skid phase. While the solid tends to read the boards early and create an arcing motion, the Tremendous Pearl delays the hook and responds more sharply to the friction at the end of the oil pattern. Set against the Radical Katana, the Tremendous Pearl is surprising with somewhat stronger midlane read thanks to the hefty Guru core, but it offers a slightly rounder and more controllable motion at the breakpoint than the extremely angular Katana. Against symmetrical pearl balls from other manufacturers of that era, the asymmetric core of the Tremendous Pearl provides a decisive advantage in carry, since it drives more energy through the pins when it enters the pocket.
On the Lanes
This ball is an excellent choice for medium oil conditions and typical house shots, especially once the lane has already gone through some transition. When balls with a dull surface start losing energy too early (burn-out), the Tremendous Pearl lets you move deeper and throw the ball further outside. The polished coverstock ensures the ball stores enough energy for the backend, while the asymmetric core makes sure the ball still finds its way back to the pocket even at steep angles. It suits bowlers who need help generating entry angle as well as rev-dominant bowlers looking for a ball that ignores the heads but grabs reliably on the backend.
