First Impressions
The Storm Torrent Rush, released in August 2017 as an exclusive international release (Overseas), adds a dynamic pearl variant to the Thunder line. Visually, the ball stands out with its combination of Red and Bronze Pearl, giving it a warm but aggressive look on the shelf and on the lane. Inside works the Booster HV (High Volume) Core, a symmetrical core specified with a 2.56 RG and a 0.044 differential (at 15 lbs). Those numbers sit in the medium range and provide a good balance of length and controlled flare. This core is wrapped in the legendary R2S Pearl Reactive coverstock, known for its cleanliness through the heads. The 1500-grit polished factory finish gives the ball a high gloss, which suggests it was designed to get through the heads effortlessly and save its energy for a late reaction down the lane.
Comparison
Compared directly to the original Storm Torrent, which has a solid surface and is known for an early, smooth motion, the Torrent Rush behaves completely differently. While the original Torrent serves as a benchmark for fresh oil and reads the boards early, the Torrent Rush skids well past that zone and responds to friction noticeably later. It's the perfect complement when the solid Torrent picks up too early. Compared with the Storm Hy-Road Pearl, both use the same R2S Pearl shell, but the cores differ: the Booster HV Core of the Torrent Rush has a slightly lower RG than the Hy-Road's Fe2 core, which makes the Torrent Rush tend to transition into its roll a bit earlier and appear a shade more controllable at the breakpoint without losing the snap. Against a weaker ball like the Storm Match Up Pearl, the Torrent Rush offers more flare potential and a stronger motion through the pins, making it an upgrade in terms of carry.
On the Lanes
The Storm Torrent Rush is an excellent choice for medium oil conditions and typical house shots that have already gone through some transition. It plays to its strengths when the front part of the lane dries up ("burn-out") and dull balls lose energy too early. Thanks to the polished R2S Pearl surface, it ignores the friction in the heads and stores its rotation for the backend, where it makes a strong but predictable arc to the pocket. It's ideal if you like to open up the lane and play angles, since it comes back reliably even from way outside. For tournament players it's a valuable option later in a block to maintain carry when the lane gets ugly, while for league bowlers it can often serve as a strong house ball for the entire night.
