First Impressions
The Motiv Top Thrill presents itself as a completely redesigned ball for dry lanes, available in several versions (Solid, Hybrid and Pearl). The ball uses the symmetrical Halogen V2 core with a 2.59" RG at 15 pounds and a low differential of 0.023". This modified Halogen version was developed specifically for dry lanes, but still offers enough core strength for various angles of attack and versatile drilling options. The Solid version uses the new Turmoil XP2 Solid Reactive coverstock with a 4000 grit LSS surface, while the Hybrid variant uses the Turmoil XP2 Hybrid Reactive cover with a 5500 grit LSP finish. The Pearl version comes with the Turmoil XP Pearl cover, also with a 5500 grit LSP finish. Comparison
All test versions showed more overall motion and a harder reaction in dry areas than the Motiv Blue Tank and Tank Yellowjacket, but stayed smoother than balls like the Top Thrill Hybrid or the entire Venom line. In a direct comparison, the Top Thrill was stronger than the Motiv Burgundy Tank on dry lanes, but not as strong as the Motiv Covert Tank, reacting later than the Covert Tank while offering a better entry angle. The Top Thrill series sits below the Venom and Supra lines in the Motiv hierarchy. The Hybrid version proved more versatile in testing than the Solid variant and offered more length with a sharper reaction at the breakpoint. On the Lanes
The Top Thrill is aimed at speed-dominant players on very dry lanes and offers real performance rather than just the lowest price, while balanced players need it as an important part of their tournament arsenal for low oil volumes and high-friction surfaces. If you are rev-dominant, the Top Thrills are a must in the bag — the Solid version suits low-volume patterns played with straighter angles, while the Hybrid variant is an excellent burn ball. Strokers showed the best reaction on dry oil patterns, since their ability to play tighter angles through the heads was exactly what the ball needed under those conditions. The ball provides effortless motion thanks to its pearl characteristics and shiny surface, but stays controllable and smooth rather than snappy, which makes it ideal for the "straighter is greater" game over an entire evening.
