First Impressions
Released in August 2023, the Motiv Top Thrill Solid takes technically precise aim at the light oil volume segment. Visually it comes in a striking color combination of orange, sky blue and navy. Inside works the proven Halogen V2 core, characterized by a very high RG value of 2.59 (at 15 lbs). This core is designed to store energy for a long time and carry the ball far down the lane. It is paired with the Turmoil XP2 Solid Reactive coverstock. Unlike many balls in this performance class, which are often shipped with a high-gloss polish, the Top Thrill Solid features a 4000 grit LSS finish. This matte treatment takes the extreme nervousness at the breakpoint out of the ball and provides more stable traction without burning up energy early.
Comparison
Compared directly to the Motiv Top Thrill Hybrid released at the same time, the Solid is noticeably more controlled. While the Hybrid reacts quickly to friction at the end of the oil pattern and creates an angular motion, the Solid reads the lane somewhat earlier and offers a rounder, smoother arc. Using the Roto Grip Hustle RIP as a reference, the Top Thrill Solid has to be rated somewhat weaker overall. The Halogen V2 core flares less than the core of the Hustle series, which makes the Motiv ball work even better on extremely dry lanes, where the Hustle might already be too strong. Against a Storm Tropical Surge, the Top Thrill Solid offers more security in the midlane thanks to the matte 4000 finish and avoids the skid that can sometimes occur with polished entry-level balls on uneven oil.
On the Lanes
The ideal application for the Top Thrill Solid is lanes with little oil or heavily played heads. When high-performance balls hook too early or become too unpredictable at the breakpoint, this ball provides the necessary control. It is an excellent fit if you have a high rev rate and need a ball that doesn't immediately overreact on contact with dry boards. For strokers it is also a valuable addition, allowing you to stay farther right on the boards in dry conditions without having to open up the angle artificially. The ball smooths out the transition and provides a clean entry into the pocket when lane conditions get difficult and dry.
