First Impressions
The Columbia 300 Top Speed marks a technological milestone for the brand, since it's the first Columbia 300 ball to use the groundbreaking HK22 (HyperKinetic22) base technology. Visually it shows up in a striking mix of "Scarlet," silver, and purple that looks very dynamic on the lane. Inside works the proven asymmetric Shifter core, which at 15 lbs delivers a 2.478 RG, a 0.050 differential, and a 0.015 intermediate differential. Those numbers point to a core that revs up early while keeping its asymmetry under control. The cover is the new HK22 – Formula 1 pearl reactive material. Out of the box the surface is finished with 500/1000/1500 Siaair and Crown Factory Compound. This combination promises a ball that, despite the strong core, glides very cleanly through the heads and reacts extremely quickly to friction thanks to the HK22 chemistry.
Comparison
Compared directly to the original Columbia 300 Speed, which used a hybrid cover without HK22, the Top Speed is noticeably longer and more angular. Where the original Speed read the lane earlier and showed a rounder overall motion, the Top Speed almost completely ignores the heads and saves its energy for a whipping backend snap. Compared to the Columbia 300 High Speed, which sits between the two as the hybrid version, the Top Speed offers the fastest response to dry boards. It plays in a similar category to the Hammer Black Widow Ghost Pearl, though the HK22 formula often makes the Top Speed look a bit "cleaner" still, with an even more defined change of direction at the breakpoint. It's more aggressive in the backend than many symmetric pearl balls, but it also asks for a little more oil in the heads than those do.
On the Lanes
The Top Speed is an excellent choice for medium to heavier oil conditions where you want to open up the lane. Thanks to the HK22 cover it generates length effortlessly, even once the heads have been played in a bit. Its biggest strength is recovery: you can move deep inside and send the ball well out to the right, because it comes back off the edge reliably. It's ideal for the transition phase, when solid balls burn up too early but you still need the punch of an asymmetric core. On extremely dry lanes, though, it could react too sensitively ("too jumpy"), while in a flood of oil it may skid too far before it grabs.
