First Impressions
The Dyno-Thane Threshold shows up in a striking color combination of purple, gold and silver that makes an unmistakable picture on the lane. Technically, this model is built around an asymmetric single density core that sits in the medium to low range with a 2.510 RG. This core design promotes a quick but controlled energy transfer through the forward motion. The core is paired with a massive 0.055 differential, which builds enormous flare potential and ensures that a fresh contact surface of the ball is always displacing oil. Wrapped around the core is a reactive Soaker ATC cover, finished at the factory with a very coarse, dull 800 grit. This extremely tacky surface is aimed specifically at generating massive traction and preventing uncontrolled sliding. Through this combination of an asymmetric core laid out for strong rotation and a very absorbent surface, the Threshold is designed to practically cut through large amounts of oil in the heads and establish secure contact with the lane very early, without completely giving up its final energy for the hit into the pocket.
Comparison
In comparison, the Dyno-Thane Threshold shows a specific behavior pattern that clearly sets it apart from ordinary benchmark balls. Compared with an established solid model like the Storm Phaze II, the Threshold tends toward an even more aggressive and earlier reaction in the midlane thanks to its asymmetric core and very high differential. Where the Storm Phaze II draws a rather round and predictable curve, the Threshold produces massive flare that literally forces the ball into the hook as soon as it leaves the heavily oiled area. Against a ball like the Brunswick Danger Zone, known for its balanced length control, the Threshold will start reading the lane considerably earlier and therefore absolutely requires a higher oil volume in the heads so it doesn't burn up prematurely. Compared directly with polished asymmetric balls, this model offers considerably more security on the boards because of the coarse finish, but gives up the very angular direction change in the backend that is often preferred on drier conditions.
On the Lanes
In practice, the Dyno-Thane Threshold is an absolute specialist for medium to heavily oiled lane conditions and freshly laid oil patterns. If you throw the ball very fast, or if you naturally have a lower rev rate and struggle to get the ball into the hook in time, you'll benefit enormously from the aggressive surface. The extremely high flare potential should ensure that the ball plows right through the oil and generates a reliable, strong move toward the pocket. Because this model soaks up an extreme amount of oil and looks for friction very early, the right timing on the ball change during the block is critical. Once the lane moves into transition and the heads dry up on the heavily played boards, the Threshold will tend to use up its rotational energy far too early. At that moment the ball noticeably loses carry, since it lacks the necessary punch at the pin deck. For playing heavy carrydown or dried-up lanes, it is largely unsuitable in its dull factory condition. Left in its rough element, however, it remains an excellent tool to start on heavy oil, one that lets you play deeper and leave the hard work in the midlane to the ball.
