First Impressions
The Vamp from Monster Bowling was released in December 2017 as a specialized ball for drier conditions and shorter oil patterns. Visually, the ball comes in a deep black with a striking red vampire logo, giving it an aggressive look. Technically, this ball is built around a symmetrical core with a relatively high RG of 2.56 and a low differential of 0.031 at 15 pounds. This combination is specifically designed to start the roll late and prevent any uncontrolled breakaway. The cover is a classic pearl reactive coverstock, finished at the factory to a high gloss (1500 grit polished) to guarantee maximum length through the heads.
Comparison
Compared to the Roto Grip Hustle Ink, The Vamp offers noticeably more length and a cleaner skid phase, since its pearl cover reacts less to the midlane than the solid Hustle. Set next to the Storm Phaze II, the enormous performance gap becomes clear: while the Phaze II is designed for high oil volume and strong traction, The Vamp comes across almost like a precision tool that only reacts where the Phaze II would already have burned up its energy. Compared to the Brunswick Rhino, The Vamp shows a somewhat stronger backend reaction, which makes it a higher-performing option for the step up from entry-level balls to performance equipment. Compared to asymmetrical pearls like the Radical Beyond Ridiculous, The Vamp is considerably more controllable and less jumpy at the breakpoint, which makes it more predictable on difficult, dry lanes.
On the Lanes
The Vamp is the ideal choice for light oil conditions or extremely broken-down lanes at the end of a long tournament day. Thanks to the polished pearl surface and the high-RG core, it should glide almost without resistance through the heads and the midlane in order to save its energy for a controlled change of direction at the end of the pattern. It is especially effective if you have a high rev rate and often struggle with too early a ball reaction on dry lanes. On a typical house shot (THS) it is the perfect "ball 3" in the bag when transition makes it nearly impossible to hold the pocket with stronger balls. It lets you keep the line more direct without the ball "hanging up" in the middle of the lane. For bowlers with very low ball speed, The Vamp also offers an excellent solution for avoiding an early turn into the pins and achieving a clean entry angle into the pocket.
