First Impressions
Released in December 2008, the Ebonite The One Pearl marks the return of one of the most successful product lines in bowling history. It combines the legendary Centrex Symmetrical Mass Bias core with the proven GB 10.7 Pearl Reactive coverstock. Technically, this core is an absolute powerhouse: with an extremely low 2.46 RG and a massive 0.056 differential (at 15 lbs), it ranks among the earliest-revving and highest-flaring engines on the market. The Symmetrical Mass Bias designation refers to the unique shape, which looks symmetrical but exhibits asymmetric performance characteristics due to its density distribution. The factory finish of 4000 Abralon with Powerhouse Factory Finish Polish gives the ball a shiny look that promises length. But don't be fooled: with its extremely strong core and the aggressive GB 10.7 base chemistry, this is not a ball for dry lanes but a high-performance tool that generates plenty of traction despite the polish.
Comparison
Compared directly to the original Ebonite The One (solid), which dominated the bowling world years earlier, the pearl version offers noticeably more length through the heads and a more aggressive move at the breakpoint. Where the original was known for its early, round arc, the pearl stores energy longer and then releases it more explosively. Looking outside the brand within the same era, The One Pearl compares well to the Hammer Black Widow Pearl. Both balls use legendary cores and pearl covers. The Ebonite The One Pearl sets itself apart with a significantly lower RG (2.46 versus 2.50 on the Widow), which makes it feel more stable in the midlane and transition into roll earlier, while the Widow often skids a bit longer and turns more sharply on the backend. It offers a heavier roll phase into the pins than typical symmetrical pearl balls such as a Storm Hy-Road.
On the Lanes
The Ebonite The One Pearl is made for medium to heavy oil patterns. It's the ideal solution when you need the traction of a high-performance core but the surface of a solid ball would burn up energy too early. Thanks to the polished finish it glides cleanly through the heads, but as soon as it finds friction, the high differential produces a massive change of direction. It works excellently for playing the transition, once the middle of the lane has been used a bit and you're forced to move left and open up the pocket. The ball generates enough angle to kick out the corner pins (carry) even from deeper lines, without losing the control you'd expect from a core that revs up this early. It is less suited to extremely dry lanes, however, since the strong core would go to work too early there and rob the ball of energy at impact.
