First Impressions
The Visionary The Crow shows up in a very plain, classic single-color black. Behind that understated exterior, however, sits an extremely capable urethane concept. At the heart of the ball is the symmetrical Ogre HDC core, which already saw successful duty in the manufacturer's proven Raven series. For a pure urethane ball, this core carries surprisingly dynamic numbers. The technical specs on a 15-pound ball show a medium 2.560 RG and a 0.044 differential, which is remarkably high for this class of ball. Wrapped around this dynamic engine is the special HPU Throwback Urethane coverstock. To guarantee the classic early traction of a urethane ball, the surface comes out of the box with an extremely coarse 500-grit Abralon finish. This combination of the dull, extremely tacky cover and the unexpectedly strong symmetrical core should make the ball read the oil extremely early and develop a very smooth, controllable reaction down the lane without neglecting the punch needed at the end of the pattern.
Comparison
Put side by side with others, the Visionary The Crow shows a motion profile that clearly sets it apart from many traditional urethane balls. Using the industry standard Storm Pitch Black as a direct reference, key structural differences stand out. The Storm Pitch Black has a substantially lower differential of just 0.022. As a result, the Visionary The Crow with its 0.044 differential generates noticeably more flare potential on the lane. It flares appreciably more and grabs the oil more decisively, which results in a stronger overall move. While the Storm Pitch Black is known for its extremely smooth, short and flat reaction, The Crow offers a bit more room for a stronger hook toward the pocket, yet still preserves the round, predictable arc of a pure urethane ball. Compared to a reactive solid like the Storm Phaze II, the classic urethane character is unmistakable: The Crow starts working way up in the heads and almost completely ignores excessive friction at the end of the oil pattern, which rules out any sharp direction change off the backend. As the oil pattern moves into transition over the course of a game, the HPU Throwback cover behaves extremely steadily and smooths out unruly lane conditions beautifully.
On the Lanes
Given its specific design, the Visionary The Crow is intended primarily for shorter sport patterns, dry to medium house shots and conditions with heavy friction. The extremely coarse 500 Abralon cover, in combination with the urethane shell, makes the ball bite into the heads extremely early without overreacting to sudden dry boards. That makes it an excellent tool if you have a very high rev rate, or for heavily played lanes where modern reactive balls simply dump too much energy at the breakpoint and become uncontrollable. Thanks to the strong Ogre HDC core, though, The Crow also gives bowlers with a bit less rotation the chance to use a urethane ball effectively, since the core provides additional mechanical help in building the hook. The ball gets into a stable roll phase very early, which naturally flattens the entry angle into the pocket while at the same time maximizing predictability. For wet house shots or especially long oil patterns, this ball lacks the kinetic energy needed in the back part of the lane to generate reliable carry, since it simply spends itself too early. When the conditions call for an extremely smooth and forgiving reaction, however, this ball delivers a maximum of predictability and stability.
