First Impressions
The Motiv Tank Blitz shows up in a strong red tone and represents the second generation of Motiv's Microcell Polymer technology. The symmetrical Gear core from the Venom Shock delivers a 2.48 RG and a 0.034 differential, giving the ball a lower RG and lower differential than the Covert Tank. The Frixion+ Microcell Polymer coverstock absorbs more oil in order to handle higher oil volumes better, which makes the ball react earlier and more evenly than its predecessor. The 2000 grit LSS surface offers advanced players a new ball characteristic and average players a very early and smooth option for medium oil conditions.
Comparison
The new Frixion+ Microcell Polymer coverstock produces an earlier hook on the lane than the Frixion cover of the Covert Tank. Combined with the stronger surface, which helps the ball handle more oil, the Tank Blitz delivered more overall hook and more continuation through the pin deck; while the Covert Tank got into the pocket more easily on drier lane patterns, the Blitz fit best on medium patterns. Compared to the Covert Tank, the Blitz is the stronger ball overall, earlier and more continuous than its counterpart. Compared to the Covert Tank and the Motiv Supra it is about 5 boards stronger, while it comes out about 2 boards weaker than the Venom Recoil. Despite Motiv's mention of a "more traditional urethane shape," the ball is almost as strong out of the box as the Storm Pro-Motion.
On the Lanes
The early, smooth shape of the Tank Blitz allows it to be used successfully on higher oil volume. In testing the ball fit best on medium lane patterns, though it is also useful on lower and higher volume profiles. Higher rev players will appreciate this ball, while medium to lower rev players will love the Blitz because they can throw it in their comfort zone when there is more volume or when the transition has pushed the oil around. The low RG core with its low differential keeps the flare under control and makes sure the ball stays smooth but strong in the backend. The ball truly embodies continuation through the pins; it needs considerably more oil in the heads to keep from "rolling out," but with enough oil it continues like no other ball.
