First Impressions
The Storm Sure Lock S was released in April 2018 as an exclusive overseas model and represents a modified version of the original Sure Lock. Visually, the ball impresses with an elegant color blend of black and silver. Inside works the extremely powerful RAD-X Core, an asymmetric core known for its high dynamics and energy release. In the 15-pound version, this core shows a low RG of 2.48, a high differential of 0.054 and a strong intermediate differential of 0.018. These numbers signal massive flare potential and aggressive core activity. The coverstock is NRG Smooth Solid Reactive. Unlike the original Sure Lock, which often reacted very early and rough, the Sure Lock S comes from the factory with a 1500 grit polished finish. This combination of a heavyweight core and a polished nanotechnology shell should unite a more controlled skid phase with a tremendous backend hit.
Comparison Compared to the original Storm Sure Lock (Solid), the Sure Lock S offers noticeably more length through the heads. While the original is known for handling maximum oil volume and a very early reaction, the polish moves the Sure Lock S breakpoint further down the lane without giving up the stability of the RAD-X Core. Compared with the Storm Lock, the Sure Lock S seems a bit calmer in the midlane, but shows a stronger continuation once it contacts friction. Compared to the Storm Code Red, the Sure Lock S provides more traction in oil thanks to the NRG nanotechnology, which makes it less prone to sliding through the fronts when the middle of the lane still carries a lot of volume. Against a symmetric ball like the Storm Phaze II, the Sure Lock S shows a much more asymmetric and angular change of direction, which can lead to a steeper entry angle into the pocket. It therefore slots in as a more powerful "big asymmetric pearl/polished solid" that offers more board coverage than most standard benchmark balls.
On the Lanes The ideal application for the Storm Sure Lock S is on medium to heavy oil patterns where a strong change of direction at the breakpoint is desired. Because of the polished finish, the ball is an excellent choice if you play high oil volume but find that dull balls lose steam too early and have no energy left at the pin deck. The Sure Lock S stores that energy through the heads and only releases it once it reaches the friction at the end of the pattern. If you throw the ball fast, it is a valuable tool for getting a defined motion even on slick lanes. Rev-dominant players, on the other hand, can use the ball to play big angles, since the RAD-X Core reliably comes back off the backend. On very dry lanes, however, the ball will be too hard to control because of its asymmetric power and could produce unpredictable reactions. In the pocket, the sheer mass of the core combined with the NRG shell delivers outstanding carry. All in all, the Sure Lock S is a powerhouse for bowlers looking for maximum backend power without giving up the traction of the nanotechnology.
