First Impressions
The Storm Super Lock is an asymmetrical bowling ball developed specifically for international markets. Visually it comes in a color combination of royal, magenta and white. Technically, the ball is built around the RAD-X core. For a 15-pound ball that means an RG of 2.48, a differential of 0.054 and an asymmetrical differential of 0.018. The cover is the NeX Pearl Reactive coverstock, which comes with a 1500-grit polished finish out of the box. One special feature of this model is the built-in Lemon Blossom scent. These specifications point to a ball that should skid well through the heads and store energy for a definite move on the backend.
Comparison Since the Storm Super Lock is built on the same RAD-X core as the original Storm Lock, a comparison with that model is the obvious place to start. The original Lock came with the dull GI-15 hybrid cover and was designed for maximum hook on heavy oil. The Super Lock, by contrast, uses the polished NeX Pearl cover. That makes the Super Lock get through the front part of the lane noticeably cleaner than its predecessor. Where the original Lock built traction early and scored in the pocket on heavy oil, the Super Lock stores its energy longer and responds more quickly to friction. Compared to asymmetrical pearl balls like the Storm Dark Code, the RAD-X core should give the Super Lock an even more defined and potentially more angular change of direction on the backend, provided there is enough oil in the heads to keep it on length.
On the Lanes The Storm Super Lock is very well suited to medium to heavy oil volumes when you need a ball that doesn't build traction too early but reacts strongly to the friction at the end of the oil pattern. The polished pearl cover combined with the strong RAD-X core should deliver a strong angle into the pocket. It's a good option when the lanes change over the course of a game and you have to move deeper. When the heads start to dry up and stronger, dull balls lose energy too early, the Super Lock can generate the length needed to improve carry. If you have a lower rev rate, you'll benefit from the strong core dynamics to get the ball rolling, while higher rev rate players will appreciate the clean cover to keep the ball on line before it shows its full strength on the backend. For very dry conditions or short oil patterns the Super Lock is less suitable, since the asymmetrical core could react too quickly or too erratically there.
