First Impressions
Released in July 2018, the AMF Sumo SE (Special Edition) marks the return of one of the most iconic names in AMF history. This ball targets the mid-price segment but delivers performance numbers well above it. Inside works the classic symmetrical Sumo core, equipped with a low 2.50 RG and a high 0.050 differential (at 15 lbs). This combination produces quick revving and solid flare potential. The exciting part of this release is the shell: AMF uses the F70 solid reactive coverstock but ships the ball with a shiny 1500 grit polished finish. This pairing of a chemically tacky solid cover and a smooth polish gives the ball in black/gold/silver a reaction that should combine the best of two worlds: length through the heads and stability in the midlane.
Comparison
Compared directly to many pure pearl balls in this segment (such as the Ebonite Destiny Pearl of that era), the Sumo SE offers a considerably more controlled reaction on over/under conditions thanks to its solid base. Where pure pearls often squirt through oil streaks, the F70 cover of the Sumo SE grabs earlier. Looking outside the brand, the ball reaction strongly recalls the legendary Ebonite Game Breaker 2 Gold or similar polished solid balls. It is not as aggressive and snappy as a Storm Hy-Road, instead offering a heavier, rounder roll to the pocket. It acts as a safety net: it generates enough length but avoids unpredictable jumping at the breakpoint.
On the Lanes
The AMF Sumo SE is a fantastic ball for typical house shots and medium oil conditions. It is ideal for league bowlers looking for a benchmark ball that forgives mistakes. Thanks to the polish it gets through the drier heads late in the evening effortlessly, while the strong symmetrical core and the solid chemistry make sure it does not look weak at the end of the pattern. It is especially effective during transition, when you need a ball that reads the lane without overreacting badly. If you throw the ball at lower speed, it is often a better choice than dull solids because it does not burn up energy as early.
