First Impressions
The Storm Summit Peak extends the popular Summit line and presents itself as a logical evolution for bowlers looking for a specific addition to their ball bag. Visually striking is the three-color design in Goldenrod, Mint and Iridium, which gives the ball an unmistakable presence on the lane. Technically, the Summit Peak is based on the proven architecture of its predecessor, the original Storm Summit, but modifies key components for a different ball reaction. Inside works the Centripetal HD - A.I. core. This symmetrical core construction is characterized by a very low RG of 2.46 (at 15 lbs) and a high differential of 0.056. The special feature here lies in the A.I. (Amplified Inertia) technology, in which the outer shell of the core is shaped so that it optimizes the moment of inertia in favor of the RG value, which should get the ball into rotation early. Unlike the original Summit, however, the hybrid version is not used here, but rather the TX-23 Pearl Reactive cover. This coverstock ships with the factory Reacta Gloss finish, which at first glance already suggests considerably more length than with sanded balls. The combination of a very early-revving, strong core and a clean pearl surface aims to make the ball's energy management more efficient by minimizing friction in the heads, while the high differential provides sufficient flare potential in the backend.
Comparison
Side by side, the Storm Summit Peak shows itself to be the ideal complement to the original Storm Summit. While the original Summit, with its hybrid shell and 3000-grit finish, is designed to read early and produce a rounded, controllable motion, the Summit Peak is noticeably more delayed. In direct comparison, the Peak should be playable several boards further inside, since the pearl surface lets it skid more cleanly through the heads and make a sharper direction change at the end of the oil pattern. It thus fills the gap that opens up when balls like the Storm Phaze II or the original Summit start to lose energy too early. Compared to the Roto Grip TNT Infused, which is likewise a symmetrical ball with a polished surface, the Summit Peak should get started somewhat earlier and rounder thanks to the Centripetal HD core, while the TNT Infused often shows a more angular reaction. Bringing the 900 Global Zen Gold Label into the comparison, the Summit Peak is expected to position itself a bit stronger in overall hook, since the A.I. core works more aggressively than the Zen's Meditate core. The Summit Peak is therefore less a replacement for weaker pearl balls like the Storm Hy-Road, and much more a "step-down" option from strong solid or hybrid balls once lane conditions begin to change and more length is needed without giving up core strength.
On the Lanes
The ideal range of use for the Storm Summit Peak lies primarily on medium to heavy oil conditions, especially once the transition sets in. It is predestined for the phase of the game in which the original line with sanded balls "burns up" and the ball gets into friction too early. Here the TX-23 Pearl surface allows you to move further left (for right-handers) and throw the ball over the drier part of the lane without it grabbing immediately. The motion pattern can be described as "clean and continuous": the ball should come through the heads effortlessly, stay stable through the midlane and make a strong but controllable arc to the pocket in the backend. This should provide improved carry, since the ball still has enough rotational energy when it enters the pins. If you throw the ball at lower speed, the Peak is a good option for generating enough length, while if you have a high rev rate you should benefit from the ball's ability to play steep angles without losing control at the breakpoint. It is excellently suited to typical house shots, where you often find a lot of oil in the middle and a lot of friction on the outside boards, since it can forgive mistakes in your release to a certain degree thanks to its strong core-cover combination and only releases its energy where it is needed for pin impact.
