First Impressions
The Storm Star Lock, released in November 2016 as an exclusive international edition (Overseas Release), brings the massive power of the Lock series to market in a new variation. Technically, the ball is built on the proven asymmetric RAD-X core, specified with a low 2.48 RG and a high 0.054 differential (at 15 lbs) along with a strong 0.018 intermediate differential. Those numbers stand for extremely quick revving and massive flare potential. This aggressive core is paired with a pearl reactive coverstock (often specified as R3S Pearl or similar) that comes polished out of the box. This mix of a core built for heavy oil and a cover that creates length promises a spectacular skid/snap reaction that is especially popular on international lanes.
Comparison
Compared directly to the Storm Snap Lock, which was released globally in the same period and also uses the RAD-X core with a pearl cover, the Star Lock is often described as a touch cleaner through the heads. While the Snap Lock sometimes reads a bit earlier (depending on the batch), the Star Lock glides more effortlessly over the heads and saves even more energy for the backend. Compared to the Storm Code Black, both balls show a strong direction change. The Code Black (RAD4 core), however, often feels somewhat "longer and thinner" in its arc, while the Star Lock, thanks to the RAD-X core, conveys a heavier, more rolling feel at the pin deck and is less easily deflected by oil in the pocket.
On the Lanes
The Storm Star Lock is predestined for medium to heavy oil and situations where the lane "breaks down" (transition). It is the ideal choice when dull solid balls (like the original Storm Lock) hook too early and burn up. Thanks to the polished pearl surface, it completely ignores broken-down heads, while the strong asymmetric core makes sure the ball doesn't skid through the midlane but instead turns aggressively toward the pocket. It lets you play deep angles and use a lot of the lane. For dry lanes the core is too strong (risk of burn-out), but on a fresh house shot with a clean backend it is an absolute weapon for maximum carry.
