First Impressions
The Columbia 300 Spoiler Alert, released in November 2018, brings a shiny pearl option to the popular Spoiler series. Visually, it shows up in a mix of purple, black and silver. Technically it is built on the symmetric Spoiler core, which with a 2.52 RG and a 0.045 differential (at 15 lbs) provides a balanced relationship between length and backend motion. The defining feature is the Reflex Pearl HST coverstock (Hyper Shock Technology). This special material blend, already used in the original Spoiler, is meant to optimize energy transfer to the pins. Combined with the factory finish of 500/1000 Abralon plus Powerhouse Factory Finish Polish, the ball is designed to get through the heads very cleanly.
Comparison
In a direct comparison to the original Columbia 300 Spoiler (solid), the Spoiler Alert generates noticeably more length and a considerably sharper reaction to friction at the end of the pattern. Where the solid predecessor reads the lane earlier and runs rounder, the Alert saves its energy almost entirely for the backend. Against an Ebonite Game Breaker 3 Pearl, the Spoiler Alert shows a slightly quicker response time at the breakpoint and feels more dynamic in the pocket. Compared to the Storm Hy-Road it offers similar length, but reads the midlane minimally earlier thanks to the somewhat stronger core, which gives it more stability with light carrydown.
On the Lanes
The Spoiler Alert is predestined for medium oil conditions and is especially effective once the lane has already been played in during league (transition). As soon as stronger balls with a dull surface lose energy too early or "burn" in the oil in the heads, this ball is the right choice. It glides effortlessly over dry heads and develops plenty of hook on the backend. Thanks to Hyper Shock Technology it stands out with exceptionally good carry, since the cover deflects less and drives energy efficiently through the pin deck. It is an ideal ball for moving your line inside and using the dry boards outside as a bumper.
