First Impressions
The Storm Spin is a rare release from May 2017, produced primarily for the international market (Asia). This ball brings back the celebrated Tri-Sphere core that originally caused a stir in the Optimus series. At 15 pounds, this symmetric core delivers a low RG of 2.48 and a strong differential of 0.048. Those numbers stand for quick rev-up and a healthy amount of flare. The core is wrapped in the special AX-17 Pearl reactive coverstock. This shell comes finished at the factory with a 1500 grit polish, giving the ball a shiny look that is often done in silver. The combination of the Tri-Sphere core's centripetal character and the smooth pearl shell points to a classic skid-snap reaction: effortless glide through the heads and an explosive release of energy at the breakpoint.
Comparison Technically, the Storm Spin is best understood as a direct relative of the Storm Optimus (Solid), but in a pearl version that offers more length. Compared to the Storm Hy-Road Pearl, which is also known for its length, the Spin feels somewhat "heavier" in its rotation because of the Tri-Sphere core and tends to pick up the midlane oil a bit more strongly before it turns in the backend. Where the Hy-Road Pearl runs a very long, stretched-out curve, the Spin offers a somewhat more compact and sharper change of direction. Compared to the Storm Marvel Pearl, the Spin often shows a more angular entry angle due to the higher core dynamics (Tri-Sphere vs. centripetal), while the Marvel Pearl is famous for its extremely round and controllable arc.
On the Lanes The Storm Spin is ideally suited to medium oil conditions. Its strength clearly lies in playing broken-down lanes (transition), when friction in the front part of the lane increases. The polished AX-17 Pearl surface helps it ignore the "dry heads" and preserve energy to the end of the pattern. It is an excellent choice if you like to let the ball run and need a defined kick in the backend to scatter the pins. Because of the low RG, it still gets into a roll in time so as not to overshoot the target (over/under), which gives it a certain stability that pure skid-flip balls often lack. It serves as an excellent step down when a strong solid ball starts to hook too early.
