First Impressions
The Storm Solution Black, released in November 2023 as an exclusive international release (Overseas), shows up in an uncompromising, deep-black look ("Black Solid"). Under the hood, Storm combines two of the most successful technologies in company history. At the center works the proven RAD-A™ Core (asymmetric), which many players will recognize from the legendary "Code" series (e.g. Code Black). This core is wrapped in the NRG-2™ Solid Reactive Cover. The finish is a special detail here: even though this is a strong solid material, the ball ships out of the box with a 1500-grit polish. The specs at 15 lbs underline its high-performance character: a 2.52 RG lets it glide through the heads a bit more easily, while the 0.051 differential and the 0.014 intermediate differential (PSA) guarantee a quick response to friction. This combination of a polished solid shell and a strongly revving asymmetric core aims to close the gap between dull solids and pure pearl balls.
Comparison
In direct comparison, the Solution Black technically falls into the "shiny asymmetrics" category, but sets itself apart through its cover formulation. The most logical comparison point is the Storm Code Black, since both use the identical RAD-A core. The Code Black, however, used an R2S Pearl surface, while the NRG-2 solid cover of the Solution Black gives it a somewhat earlier read of the lane and a rounder, more controllable shape at the breakpoint, without completely sacrificing aggressiveness in the backend. Against current balls like the Roto Grip Attention Star, the Solution Black plays a bit earlier and "rounder," since the NRG-2 material offers more traction in oil than the eTrax pearl blend of the Attention Star. Compared to a Storm Virtual Energy Blackout (also released in late 2023), the Solution Black offers more safety when the oil gets "spotty" thanks to its solid base, while the Virtual Energy Blackout makes an even more drastic change of direction in the backend. In principle it behaves like a "tamed" Storm PhysiX that generates more length.
On the Lanes
The ideal scenario for the Storm Solution Black is medium to medium-heavy oil conditions. Thanks to the polished solid cover, it works very well when the lane is in transition: it offers enough length to get through played-in heads, but the solid chemistry generates enough hold in the midlane to keep it from sliding past the breakpoint ("blow out"). If you have a medium to high rev rate, you'll appreciate this ball for opening up the pocket and playing deeper angles, since the RAD-A core produces enough torque to deliver the necessary carry even out of steep angles. For strokers or players with less hand rotation, the ball provides support through the asymmetric core, which helps force it reliably into the hook in the backend. It is less suited for extremely heavy oil (a sanded solid would be the better choice there) or extremely dry lanes, where the strong core would burn up too early.
