First Impressions
Released in October 2010, the Seismic Solaris Blackout comes in a classic high-gloss black, subtly accented with gold lettering. Inside this model works a modified version of the symmetrical Trailblazer core. With a very low RG value of 2.48 and a heavily reduced differential of 0.035, this engine is deliberately laid out for low flare potential and a calm, even rotation. The core is wrapped in the LNC Solid Reactive cover. Although this material is fundamentally a solid formulation, the ball is sanded to 2000-grit at the factory and then polished to a high gloss. This specific and rather unusual pairing of components makes the Solaris Blackout a true control ball for lighter conditions. The low RG ensures the core structurally starts up early, while the weak differential and the smooth surface effectively prevent the ball from grabbing the lane too soon or losing too much energy. The hard specs point unmistakably to a model that generates excellent length through the heads and builds an extremely smooth, predictable motion instead of reacting aggressively and angularly at the end of the oil pattern.
Comparison
Within its own product family, the Solaris Blackout shows noticeably less overall traction and a considerably milder ball motion than the original Seismic Solaris or the stronger Seismic Solaris Requiem, since those sister models come with higher differentials and grippier surfaces. Bring in a modern, proven control ball such as the Storm IQ Tour and you'll recognize a closely related design philosophy: both models rely on low RG and differential values to keep the ball from overreacting on the lane and to keep the breakpoint controllable. Thanks to its polished cover, however, the Solaris Blackout creates a bit more length than the classically matte Storm ball and works even a little rounder once it encounters friction. Compared to a typical polished ball for dried-up conditions, for instance the Brunswick Rhino, which often makes a very sharp and angular change of direction on the backend, the Blackout stands out for its extremely forgiving roll. It forgives inaccuracies at the release far better and doesn't twitch unexpectedly hard as soon as it hits the outside dry boards. It therefore positions itself as the ideal solution for situations in which conventional pearl balls behave too jumpy and strong solid balls simply burn up too early.
On the Lanes
The ideal scenarios for the Seismic Solaris Blackout are found on medium to lightly oiled lane conditions as well as on tricky, shorter sport patterns that demand a high degree of precision. Especially when the transition is well advanced, the oil in the front part of the lane has been played away and the tracks are getting very dry, this model plays to its absolute strengths. The ball glides effortlessly and energy-efficiently through the worn heads and maintains a very steady, arcing motion toward the pocket without ever reacting excessively to dry spots. If you have a high rev rate and often struggle to keep your equipment on the right line on dried-up lanes, this model is an excellent tool, since the low flare potential effectively suppresses an uncontrollable hook. If you have a lower rev rate, though, you should primarily use this ball when there really is enough friction on the lane, because otherwise the weak core won't develop enough momentum of its own to generate an optimal entry angle. Used correctly, the gentle roll phase should deliver excellent carry, since the ball transfers its energy evenly and steadily into the pins instead of cutting through them at too steep an angle. Should the ball skid too far on somewhat fresher patterns, the surface can easily be scuffed up slightly to increase traction in the midlane. All in all, the Solaris Blackout is a highly specialized and dependable option for a maximum of control on demanding, dried-up conditions.
