First Impressions
Released in the fall of 2013, the Seismic Venator is an asymmetric bowling ball that combines very strong core technology with a high-gloss polished solid surface. Visually, the ball stands out with a striking color blend of dark blue and lime green that gives clear visual feedback about its rotation down the lane. Inside works the asymmetric Tenaci Core, which at a reference weight of 15 pounds shows a low radius of gyration of 2.485. Paired with a very high differential of 0.054 and an intermediate differential of 0.027, this core generates massive flare potential and extremely high torque. The low RG value makes the ball move quickly into a strong roll phase after it leaves the hand. This aggressive engine is wrapped in the S.F-7/9 Solid Reactive coverstock. Even though it is a solid cover, the Venator comes out of the box with a 4000 Abralon finish and is then polished. This rather unusual combination of an early-rolling core and a smooth surface should let the ball glide cleanly and with minimal resistance through the heads before it unleashes its powerful rotation in the midlane and positions itself precisely for the hook.
Comparison
Compared to other popular models on the market, the Seismic Venator shows a very distinct profile. Take the classic Storm Phaze II, considered the benchmark for symmetric solid balls, and clear differences in length development become apparent. The Storm Phaze II builds traction considerably earlier thanks to its rough matte surface and describes a very round, even arc toward the pocket. The Venator, on the other hand, uses its polished finish to travel noticeably farther down the oil before the strongly asymmetric core takes hold and forces a sharper, more explosive change of direction. Against an asymmetric pearl ball such as the Storm Snap Lock, the Venator's solid cover offers more reliable readability in the midlane despite the polish. It is less prone to unexpected overreaction when it hits early friction. Comparing it in-house with the Seismic Raging Bull Stampede, an unpolished asymmetric solid ball, the Venator shows its strengths exactly when the Stampede builds hook too early on drying lanes and loses energy. It thus skillfully bridges the gap between matte heavy-oil balls and extremely angular pearl balls.
On the Lanes
The Seismic Venator is designed primarily for medium to heavy oil conditions where both sufficient length through the heads and a very dominant backend reaction are required. Thanks to the intelligent pairing of polished cover and strong core, it is an excellent choice when the pattern dries up in the front part of the lane and the first signs of transition appear. In this phase you need a ball that gets through the worn heads effortlessly without sacrificing the power for the hit. If you throw the ball at lower speed, you'll benefit from the fact that the polish keeps the ball from burning up its rotational energy too early. At the same time, if you have a high rev rate you can play deep lines across many boards, since the asymmetric Tenaci Core reliably develops enough torque to drive the ball powerfully into the pocket from wide angles. Through the change of direction the ball proves very forgiving and responds in a defined way to the friction at the breakpoint. The dynamic core shape should also deliver devastating carry by channeling the stored energy through the pins as efficiently as possible. If the oil volume on freshly oiled lanes is extremely high, the surface can easily be scuffed with an abrasive pad to increase traction. On bone-dry lanes, however, you should switch to weaker equipment, since the strong core will otherwise turn toward the pins too early.
