First Impressions
The Hammer Scorpion shows up in a striking black-and-red look and embodies Hammer's proven mid-performance philosophy. The ball uses the LED 2.0 core, which was developed from the successful LED core of the urethane Hammer balls and is combined with an outer core, resulting in a medium RG and a high differential. The specs list a 2.541 RG and a 0.043 differential for 16 lb, and a 2.520 RG with a 0.043 differential for 15 lb. The Semtex Hybrid coverstock should deliver strong midlane and backend reaction on medium conditions. The surface comes out of the box with a 500/1000/2000 SiaAir finish. Comparison
Compared to the newer Hammer Web Pearl, the Scorpion is earlier and smoother for all testers and fits fresh medium oil patterns best. The smoother motion lets you play more firmly and stay right, while the dull factory finish provides enough hook if you want to move inside and hook it more slowly. The LED 2.0 weight block in the Scorpion is a lower-RG, higher-differential design compared to the original LED core used in the urethane Purple Hammer. Against the Hammer Arctic Vibe, it offers more traction in the midlane and an overall slower ball shape. It brings the Hammer Web Tour Edition to mind, though the Web Tour Edition had a slightly stronger cover and a bigger change of direction, while the Scorpion Low Flare provides that same big change of direction with a more consistent cover. The Scorpion proves to be an excellent choice for high friction and medium to heavy house shots. Its predictability makes it an ideal benchmark ball for figuring out how much oil is on the lane, and under the right conditions it shows a nice smooth curve and drives well through the pins. In transition you can move further left and hit the ball a little harder down the lane to keep it through the pin deck. Its durability is confirmed by user experience, with bowlers reporting that the ball still performs excellently after more than a year of heavy use. Especially if you're coming off older urethane balls, it offers a clear step up in performance while still being controllable. The recommendation for medium to heavy oil conditions with strong midlane and backend reaction makes it a versatile option for a range of player types and lane conditions.
