First Impressions
Released in September 2018, the Columbia 300 Savage positions itself as the new flagship for maximum hook in the lineup. It combines the newly developed asymmetric Savage core with the aggressive Exciter Solid Reactive coverstock. Technically, at 15 lbs the core delivers a low RG of 2.49 and a high differential of 0.051, rounded out by a strong intermediate differential. These numbers produce an extremely early revving up and massive flare potential. The factory finish of 500/2000 Abralon gives the ball, in black/purple/lime, a rough, matte texture that leaves no doubt about its intended purpose: it's meant to dig into the oil immediately. The goal of the development was to retain the enormous traction of its predecessor while improving the motion through the pins.
Comparison
The most important comparison is to the direct predecessor, the Columbia 300 Lit. While the Lit was known for its extreme hook, it tended to lose energy quickly when faced with too much friction and to look "dead" at the breakpoint ("hook-set"). The Savage uses the same chemical base (Exciter Solid), but the new core provides noticeably better energy retention and more continuation in the backend. It reads the lane almost as early as a Lit, but drives more powerfully through the pin deck. Looking at the competition, the Savage plays in the same class as the Storm Sure Lock or the Roto Grip Halo. It's a classic "snowplow" for heavy oil, yet compared to older heavy-oil balls it feels more dynamic once it exits the pattern.
On the Lanes
The Columbia 300 Savage is a specialist for heavy oil and longer patterns. It's the absolute first choice on fresh lanes when there's a thick layer of oil in the heads and midlane where other balls just skate ("hydroplaning"). It generates traction where there appears to be none, and it lets you play deeper in the oil without worrying that the ball will refuse to change direction. If you throw the ball fast, it's an indispensable tool for getting the ball into a roll early. Once the heads start to dry up ("transition"), however, the Savage usually becomes too strong and starts hooking too early, which makes a switch to polished balls like the Lit Pearl or Savage Life (which came out later) necessary.
