First Impressions
The RST Hyperdrive shows up with a striking design in a mango/magenta/royal color scheme that immediately catches the eye. As the newest development in the Roto Grip product line, it combines the proven RST (Roto Star Tour) Core with state-of-the-art coverstock technology. The asymmetric core with a 2.51 RG (16 lbs) or 2.52 RG (15 lbs), a differential of 0.051/0.055 and a PSA value of 0.016/0.017 gives the ball impressive potential for strong directional change on the backend. The higher RG value provides controlled energy storage through the heads. The real highlight of the Hyperdrive is its MicroTrax Solid coverstock, which is loaded with the highest concentration of nanoparticles. This specially developed blend offers outstanding traction on oily lanes and delivers consistent reaction through efficient oil displacement and absorption. The 2000 grit Abralon factory finish reinforces the early bite in oil without burning up too much energy.
Comparison
In a direct comparison to other high-performance balls such as the Iron Max from Storm, the Hyperdrive shows noticeably more continuation on the backend and a more aggressive hook potential. While the Iron Max grabs early and flattens out somewhat on the backend, the Hyperdrive offers both reliable early traction and a powerful continuation through the backend. This results in roughly 3-4 boards more hook potential under comparable release conditions. Against the Rockstar, a symmetrical solid from the same product line, the Hyperdrive shows a considerably stronger hook potential – up to 5-6 boards more motion – and substantially more aggressiveness through the transition phase. Compared to the ZL, the Hyperdrive is much earlier and more aggressive, while the ZL with its weaker coverstock formulation runs noticeably cleaner through the heads and is better suited to dry or transitioned lanes. The comparison to the popular Hyper Cell is especially interesting. The Hyperdrive shows similar reaction characteristics and could be a worthy successor for fans of the Hyper Cell, since it offers comparable performance with modern technology.
On the Lanes
The RST Hyperdrive is designed for medium to heavy oil conditions and reaches its full potential on longer oil patterns of 40 feet and up. It works excellently in the early stages of tournaments on freshly oiled lanes, where its strong traction and continuation provide maximum carry. The combination of a higher RG and a strong differential makes it particularly versatile in playability: on straighter lines it offers controlled energy, while at more open angles it develops impressive strength on the backend. Its reaction to friction is appropriate, but it stays more controlled than more polished balls, which makes it especially valuable on oilier conditions. Bowlers with a medium to high rev rate and higher tilt benefit the most from this ball, as they are able to make optimal use of its strengths. If you are a power player, it gives you the option of playing from deeper inside and still generating enough backend reaction. If you have a lower rev rate or higher tilt, you will also get excellent performance out of this ball, since it offers both traction in the oil and enough energy storage for a powerful finish. With the RST Hyperdrive, Roto Grip has created a true high-performance ball that plays to its strengths even on the most demanding oil conditions and will establish itself as an indispensable tool for ambitious bowlers.
