First Impressions
Released in August 2018, the Motiv Rogue Blade is a long-awaited dream for many Motiv fans, since it marks the return of the legendary Sigma core. This symmetrical core, known from the Sigma Tour, is characterized by a very low 2.47 RG and a medium 0.047 differential (at 15 lbs). It is famous for its extremely stable and controllable rotation. This proven engine is paired with a brand-new shell technology: the Hexion SE (Strength Enhanced) hybrid reactive coverstock. The factory finish of 4000 grit LSS (Laser Scan Sanded) gives the ball, in dark blue/black/orange, a matte yet smooth texture. This combination aims to perfectly close the gap between heavily grabbing solid balls and skid-happy pearl balls.
Comparison
Within the lineup, the Rogue Blade is often described as a "Venom Shock on steroids." It has a very similar, confidence-inspiring roll characteristic to the legendary Venom Shock, but thanks to the Hexion cover and the stronger core differential it is noticeably more aggressive and can handle more oil. While a Motiv Villain (asymmetrical) rolls earlier and forces a defined change of direction, the Rogue Blade offers a rounder, more flowing arc. It responds to friction more quickly than the Forza series (e.g. Forza SS), but is more controlled than the Lethal Paranoia. It combines the early read through the midlane (typical of the Sigma core) with an astonishing ability to create angle in the backend, something rarely found with a control-oriented core.
On the Lanes
The Motiv Rogue Blade is the ultimate "benchmark ball" for modern oil conditions. It is made for medium to heavier oil patterns and is often the first ball out of the bag to read the lane. Its strength is its versatility: it offers enough traction (from the hybrid material and the 4000 grit finish) not to slide on fresh oil, yet thanks to the symmetrical core it stores enough energy to still drive powerfully through the pins when you have to move your line left. It smooths out over/under reactions extremely well and is suitable for almost any player type looking for a ball that forgives mistakes and delivers a strong, continuous motion through the pin deck.
