First Impressions
The Ripcord shows up in an eye-catching purple-and-black look and brings a completely new coverstock technology to the Motiv line with the new Infusion Reactive cover. This cover proves especially strong at the breakpoint and should give the Ripcord plenty of backend recovery. Technically, the ball is built on the Oblivion core already known from the Paranoia, a symmetrical core design with medium RG and moderate differential. The specs come out to a 2.53 RG at 15 pounds and a 0.047 differential. The ball ships with a 5000 LSP polish, which gives it easy length and stores all its energy for the backend.
Comparison
In terms of ball motion, the Ripcord shows clear parallels to the Storm Marvel Pearl and Storm HyRoad, which also fall into the category of "boomy" balls. These balls are characterized by good length, then start to work and stay continuously in motion. In back-to-back testing, the Ripcord came across a touch cleaner and more angular than the Storm Marvel Pearl, with roughly two boards more hook overall. The ball combines the traditionally smooth Motiv character with the long-awaited quicker reaction, creating a kind of "smooth pop."
On the Lanes
The Ripcord plays to its strengths best on medium oil patterns, where all of the test bowlers saw strong movement between the breakpoint and the pin deck. The ball is ideal for creating incredible downlane motion at moderate oil volumes, especially when the oil in the heads is used up and angle is the only option. Because of its angularity, shots out to the outside have a chance to recover, while shots played inside generally won't hold — so you're better off missing out rather than in. With good value for the money, the Ripcord is aimed at bowlers looking for a dependable ball for medium lane conditions. For better control on fresh lane surfaces, a surface adjustment can make sense, since the polished surface can react a bit jumpy at first.
