First Impressions
The Motiv Ripcord Flight comes in an eye-catching Sky Blue design and pairs the proven dual-density Oblivion core with a 2.53 RG in 15-pound balls and a 0.047 differential. The centerpiece is the Turmoil Max Solid Reactive coverstock with a 3000 grit LSS factory finish. This cover is a modified version of the one also used in the popular Venom Shock, but with an improved formulation for more traction. The higher-RG core design should help conserve energy, while the aggressive coverstock and the coarse factory finish provide traction in oil.
Comparison
According to Motiv PBA Tour representative Brett Spangler, the Ripcord Flight was developed specifically to complement the Venom Shock when that ball can't create enough angle or has to fight the oil volume on the lane. One detailed comparison describes the ball as "Venom Shock through the first half of the lane and Chronic Paranoia in the second half," which highlights its unique character. The surface shows the typical control characteristics from Motiv that fans of balls like the Venom Shock, Rogue Assassin or Jackal Ghost already know. For many bowlers the Ripcord Flight should make an excellent benchmark ball, balancing the traits of a solid cover perfectly with more shape on the back end.
On the Lanes
The ball was developed specifically for medium oil volume and should generate powerful traction in the oil while reserving energy for an impressive continuation on the back end. The matte factory finish lets bowlers of various styles get to the pocket, with the matte surface grabbing early and creating a smooth arc down the whole lane. The Ripcord Flight works best playing more direct and rewards you with benchmark-type performance along with good forgiveness and carry — but if you open up the angle too much, you should switch balls, unless you have a whole lot of hand. On medium oil conditions or slightly broken-down lanes it offers a consistent roll that makes it easy to hold the pocket.
