First Impressions
The Hammer Red Scorpion presents itself as an overseas ball with a striking red pearl look, achieved through the Aggression NE Pearl Reactive coverstock. The specs show a lower RG of 2.494 and a higher differential of 0.052 compared to the American Scorpion. The asymmetric Scorpion core with Carbon Fiber Outer Core gives the ball a more aggressive character, while the 500 Siaair / Crown Factory Compound surface provides the necessary traction. As a pearl reactive ball it is built for high performance, and the asymmetric core type offers more flare potential than the symmetric US version.
Comparison
Compared to the American Scorpion variant, the Red Scorpion shows a noticeably more aggressive ball characteristic. While the US Scorpion uses a symmetric LED 2.0 core with a 2.541 RG and a 0.043 differential, the Red Scorpion offers more revolutions and an earlier reaction with its 2.494 RG and 0.052 differential. The pearl cover should deliver more length and a sharper backend reaction compared to the Semtex Hybrid coverstock of the standard Scorpion. Much like the Black Widow Hybrid series, the Red Scorpion should provide "enough traction on medium to heavy oil" and produce "a big sweeping continuous ball motion." Compared to other overseas balls, it positions itself between the strong asymmetric high-performance balls and the more controllable symmetric variants.
On the Lanes
The Red Scorpion is primarily suited for bowlers who need more backend reaction on medium to heavy oil patterns than the symmetric US version can provide. As an overseas ball it is approved for all sanctioned USBC league and tournament play, though possibly not for PBA competition. The asymmetric core construction makes it especially interesting if you have a higher rev rate and can take advantage of the additional flare potential. The ball should be ideal for situations in which other Scorpion variants grab too early or don't create enough angle to the pocket. The pearl cover allows for better length control combined with stronger backend motion, which makes it a valuable addition for bowlers who have already had good experiences with the Scorpion series.
