First Impressions
The Brunswick Quantum Fire Pearl, released in November 2016, brings the legendary Quantum series back with a spectacular look. The shell in Fire Pearl (a mix of orange, gold and red) stands out immediately and is emphasized further by the high-gloss finish (500 Siaair with Crown Factory Compound). Technically, Brunswick relies on a modern interpretation of the Mushroom High RG Core. This core shows extremely high numbers: a 2.610 RG and a 0.053 differential (at 15 lbs). This combination is very unusual for high-performance balls and is aimed squarely at maximum length. Another unique feature is the construction: by using a urethane layer 3.5 times thicker than usual, the coefficient of restitution is said to be increased, which according to the manufacturer improves carry. The cover is the PK 2016 Pearl Reactive material, which provides quick skid through the heads.
Comparison
Compared directly to its twin brother, the Brunswick Quantum Forest Green Solid, the Fire Pearl goes noticeably longer and is more aggressive at the breakpoint, as expected. Where the Forest Green Solid reads early and describes a controlled arc, the Fire Pearl almost completely ignores the first two thirds of the lane and only sets up late for a sharp hook. Comparing it to the Storm Code Black, popular at the same time, it's notable that the Quantum gets through dry heads even more effortlessly thanks to its extremely high RG (2.61 vs. 2.50 on the Code Black). The Code Black revs up earlier, while the Quantum Fire Pearl stores its energy longer and often shows an even steeper reaction to friction. Against a Brunswick Mastermind Brainiac, the Quantum Fire Pearl often offers a fuller sound and improved energy transfer at the pin deck thanks to the thicker shell.
On the Lanes
The Quantum Fire Pearl is the ultimate weapon for medium oil and heavily played, burned-up heads. Its range begins where other balls lose energy too early. Thanks to the high RG, it skids across the dry heads without hooking unintentionally. It does, however, absolutely require a defined dry area at the end of the pattern to carry out its aggressive direction change. If you have low ball speed, it's a blessing, because it helps you get the ball far down the lane. On fresh, longer oil, on the other hand, it is often too slippery and reacts unpredictably (over/under), since it lacks the time to stand up. Its strength is the angle: it lets you open up the pocket wide and play from deep inside out to the outside.
