First Impressions
Released in August 2018, the Brunswick Quantum Bias is one of the most eye-catching releases of the year, both visually and technically. It is completely snow white (High-Gloss Solid White), which stands out extremely well on the lane but also shows every bit of dirt and oil immediately. Technically this is a milestone: it is the first asymmetric ball in the history of the legendary Quantum series. It uses the Quantum Mushroom High RG Asymmetric core, which comes with an unusually high RG of 2.563 for a "hook monster" and a differential of 0.052 (at 15 lbs). This core is wrapped in the ECA-XR Solid Reactive coverstock. Like all true Quantums, the Bias is built with a thick-walled shell (3.5 times thicker than normal), since the filler material was omitted ("Thick Shell Technology"). The factory finish of 500/1000 Siaair provides maximum traction.
Comparison
The Quantum Bias behaves differently than typical heavy-oil balls such as the Brunswick Kingpin or the Roto Grip Halo. Those competitors mostly use low RGs to get into a roll early. The Quantum Bias, on the other hand, uses its high RG to get the ball through the heads despite the coarse 1000-grit surface ("lope"). The result is unique: it skids farther than a Kingpin, but then engages in the midlane with tremendous force and turns more aggressively at the breakpoint than the Quantum Forest Green Solid. It does not offer the classic "banana arc" of a low-RG solid, but rather a delayed reaction that is all the more violent when it comes. The thick shell also produces different acoustic feedback and an extremely direct energy transfer (coefficient of restitution) that is often higher than on multi-piece balls.
On the Lanes
The Brunswick Quantum Bias is a heavy-oil specialist. Thanks to the tacky surface it bites through any flood of oil, while the core keeps it from burning up too early. A practical side effect of the white color is that you can see the oil pattern on the ball (oil rings/flare) perfectly, which helps in practice and when analyzing ball motion — though the ball often looks "dirty" after just a few shots and requires a lot of maintenance. It is an excellent fit if you have to play on a lot of oil but struggle to get "low RG" balls far enough down the lane. Its carry is legendary: when it hits the pocket, the pins stay extremely flat and mix hard.
