First Impressions
The Brunswick Quantum Bias Pearl, released in spring 2019, continues the high-tech construction tradition the Quantum series is known for. Visually the ball is an absolute eye-catcher: it comes in a brilliant High-Gloss White Pearl that stands out immediately on the ball return and on the lane. The surface is polished at the factory with Crown Factory Compound, which maximizes the level of shine. The technical hallmark of the Quantum series is the way it is built: the ball consists of a solid, two-piece structure with no filler material (outer core). This means the ECA-XR Pearl coverstock is roughly 3.5 times thicker than on conventional bowling balls. Inside works the Quantum Mushroom High RG Core. The specs at 15 lbs are extreme: a very high RG of 2.563 combined with a strong 0.052 differential. These numbers clearly signal that the ball is designed to generate length and to react late, but massively. The thick cover also creates an altered coefficient of restitution, which physically optimizes energy transfer into the pins.
Comparison
Compared directly to the Brunswick Quantum Bias (solid), which was all white and dull, the pearl version is the exact opposite in ball motion. Where the Bias Solid was known as a "snow tire" that digs into the oil extremely early and shows a slow reaction, the Quantum Bias Pearl glides effortlessly through the heads and stores almost all of its energy for the backend. Against the Storm Hy-Road, which also uses a high-RG design, the Quantum Bias Pearl comes across as noticeably more aggressive and stronger in overall hook, since its differential (0.052) is substantially higher than the Hy-Road's. It covers more boards while keeping the clean length. Against an asymmetric pearl ball like the Hammer Black Widow Gold, the Quantum Bias Pearl is a bit rounder and more continuous at the breakpoint. It doesn't flip quite as abruptly as the Widow's Gas Mask core, but the high differential still gives it a very dynamic change of direction that is remarkable for a symmetric ball. It is clearly livelier than a Brunswick Magnitude 055, which rolls much earlier.
On the Lanes
The Brunswick Quantum Bias Pearl is a weapon for medium oil conditions and especially for the transition phase, once the heads start to dry up ("heads burn up"). Thanks to its extremely high RG it ignores early friction almost completely and pushes far down the lane before it grabs. That makes it ideal if you need to open up your angle to the pocket but have trouble getting the ball through the front part of the lane. As soon as it hits the dry backend, it reacts quickly and hard. Because of the special two-piece construction and the thick cover, this ball's carry is phenomenal; it holds energy through the pin deck extremely well and scatters the pins flat ("pin action"). It is less suited to very fresh, long oil, where it might skid too long and miss the breakpoint. If you throw the ball slowly you'll love the built-in length, while high-rev players can use it to play deep from the inside without the ball losing energy too early.
