First Impressions
Released in May 2024, the SWAG Pure Fantasy Epic presents itself as a modern evolution within the popular Fantasy line from California Bowling (SWAG). Technically, the ball is built around the proven symmetrical Mushroom Core, which in this 15-lb configuration shows a low RG of 2.486 and a medium differential of 0.044. Even before the first shot, those numbers point to an early-revving, controllable motion pattern. One decisive change is the cover: here the USY 3 Pearl Reactive coverstock is used, the same one already found on the "Buzzer Beater." Unlike many typical pearl balls, which are often delivered highly polished ("shiny"), the Pure Fantasy Epic comes with an aggressive 2000-grit finish out of the box (factory finish). This combination of a pearl blend normally known for length and a tacky, dull surface gives the ball a visibly matte texture that immediately suggests traction in the heads and through the midlane, without completely sacrificing energy retention for the backend.
Comparison
Compared directly to the original SWAG Pure Fantasy, the Epic version differs clearly in coverstock material and surface finish. Where the predecessor, with its RVR 3 cover and a smoother finish, often generated more length, the Epic reads the lane considerably earlier thanks to the USY 3 cover and the 2000-grit surface. In its reaction characteristics it is conceptually similar to benchmark balls like the Storm Phaze II, but the pearl additives in the coverstock give it a somewhat more defined move at the breakpoint once the lane begins to dry up. That positions it more aggressively than a typical "house shot killer" such as the Roto Grip Hustle, yet it stays more controllable than asymmetrical heavyweights like the Roto Grip Attention Star S2. A fitting comparison would be a dull-sanded Hammer Scorpion Strike: both balls use symmetrical cores with a medium differential to create a smooth, predictable motion, with the Pure Fantasy Epic tending to start rotating a bit earlier due to its lower RG.
On the Lanes
The SWAG Pure Fantasy Epic is predestined to be the first ball out of the bag (benchmark ball) for fresh to slightly broken-down lanes. Thanks to the low RG and the dull 2000-grit surface, it handles excess oil in the heads better than polished pearls and prevents over/under behavior on demanding patterns. It is ideal if you're looking for a ball that smooths out the transition of the oil pattern instead of jumping off friction. On typical house shots it allows a very controlled game out over the outside boards, but it can also be moved deeper into the oil line as long as there is still enough carry. As soon as the heads get too dry and the ball loses energy too early, switching to a shiny pearl ball or a ball with a higher RG would be advisable. The Epic should deliver a harmonious connection between midlane read and backend hook, which makes it an especially strong weapon on wet/dry conditions (heavy oil in the middle, dry outside boards) for hitting the pocket consistently.
